We know the legend of Luke Skywalker has grown and grown, but you also know there’s something shaking when Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill weighs in on a conversation about the size of R2-D2. Not only that but also the guy who helped build the diminutive astromech for the sequel trilogy, Lee Towersey.
Regarding the gorgeous, but perhaps incorrectly scaled images shot by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair, Hamill had this to say.

And Lee added his own thoughts.
Annie Leibovitz takes a lot of her subjects individually & stitches them together which is how this photo was taken. By choice or not, scale of R2 when put together is out. The R2 Builder is not to blame on this one! 😊 Although @HamillHimself was looking rather tall that day!

Speaking of half-scale R2 units, check out this great opportunity to own a Towersey built half-scale DeAgostini R2-D2 (which may or may not have sneaked onto the set of the film and been shot by Vanity Fair).*
Whatever the scale issues may be, there’s no denying this is a beautifully crafted image. Stay tuned to Fantha Tracks for our chat with Lee and Tim Berry from the inaugural running of ComicCon at Film New Forest which took place this past weekend.
