The Mos Eisley Cantina holds a special place in any Star Wars fan’s heart. It is one of the most beloved sequences in the Star Wars saga and is where Lucas’ vision of a galaxy far far away really comes to life. Such is the pop culture status of the Cantina that when promoting the latest film The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill and Stephen Colbert still used the fictional bar in a comedy sketch.

It is every fan’s dream to imagine what it would be like to exist in the Star Wars universe. So in this post we will take a look at what we would love most about drinking in the galaxy’s most famous bar.

Gateway to the Galaxy

For those who follow the journey of Luke Skywalker, this bar is one of the most important locations in the Original Trilogy as it is where we first meet Han Solo and Chewbacca. After being introduced to the principle characters, it is here that the film’s adventure really begins. Any fan would hope that if they too visited the Cantina, they would also go off and experience their own adventures.

The Music

Who doesn’t love a good music bar, and the Mos Eisley Cantina is arguably the most famous music bar in cinematic history. The music that plays in the bar has almost become as famous as the main theme. The catchy tune is called “Mad About Me” was composed by John Williams. The idea for the catchy tune came when George Lucas suggested to John Williams that he imagined how creatures from the future would interpret 1930s Benny Goodman swing band music.

From the moment Alec Guinness’s Ben Kenobi says “Mos Eisley spaceport you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy,” the aliens that are found in the bar have become an important part of Star Wars lore. If you blink in film, there’s a good chance you’ll miss the creatures but that hasn’t stopped fans finding out every bit of information on them. The official Star Wars website provides several details on the famous bar, including the fact that one of the creatures uses a mask created by Rick Baker for an unused Frankenstein monster.

Ideal For Card Games

The cliental and atmosphere of the Mos Eisley Cantina have made it the epitome of a futuristic bar, and no cinematic bar is complete without card games being played. PartyPoker released a list of the top seven fictional pubs to play cards in and chose to include the Mos Eisley Cantina for its music and the patrons. They did note one caveat though, that it was highly likely an alien or elderly Jedi would attack you (see below).

Relaxed Bar Rules

Most bars today have very strict rules regarding what patrons can and can’t do. The Mos Eisley Cantina is much more relaxed with only apparently a strict ban on bringing droids in. Anything else would appear perfectly acceptable including blasters and lightsabers. On a side note, if you do shoot a fellow patron it is best to leave a tip, even if it is unclear who shot first. Drinking in a bar with no rules would certainly make buying a round of drinks much more interesting. Just be careful not to offend patrons unless a Jedi master accompanies you.

The good news for Star Wars fans is that Disney is building a replicate Star Wars land, to be opened in 2019 that will feature a replica Mos Eisley Cantina. A word of warning though, all the things we would love to do while drinking in the famous bar will probably be forbidden.
