There’s a very welcome old-school vibe to the Star Wars: The Mandalorian Junior Novel by Joe Schrieber, a 208 page novel for junior readers that walks us thorugh the events of the first season of The Mandalorian. It could be the way it skips through the main plot points of the show in much the same way the Junior Editions of the original trilogy did all those years ago, or the very welcome addition of colour inserts that hint at further action just as those adaptations did, but mostly it’s because the excitement of The Mandalorian has been neatly adapted by Joe Schrieber, who did a similarly deft job with Solo: A Star Wars Story. We may be taking a brief run through the action, but it’s no less satisfying because of it.

The novel kicks off as Mando sits opposite Greef Karga, a fist full of pucks on offer and a tempting job with no chain code. Within a couple of pages we’re with the Client, making deals to capture the asset and over 31 succint but info-packed chapters we meet the Child, Cara Dune, the Armorer, IG-11, Kuill, Peli Motto, Toro Calican, Fennec Shand, Migs Mayfeld and Moff Gideon while travelling to Nervarro, Arvala-7, Sorgan and Tatooine and encountering ravinaks, jawa’s, blurgs, mudhorns and more.

For kids new to Star Wars it’s perfect, a quick way to absorb the adventures of the Mudhorn Clan, while folks already familiar with the eight episodes and the adventures within will find themselves browsing through for quotes and reading the easy, page-turnable adaptation from Schrieber, an author best known for Legends era novels Death Troopers and Red Harvest and the Canon era Maul: Lockdown. It shows some impressive versatility to hop from Star Wars horror novels to kids adaptations, and he does it in some style. Here’s hoping there’s a season two Junior Novel coming our way later this year.
