Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire is Rey’s journey, released during the same part of the summer as Madeleine Roux’s Rey-centric novel Legacy. They both show that she feels pressure to save the Resistance and the Jedi Order, all at the same time. No pressure there. But these stories show Rey’s dedication and willingness to put herself in harm’s way for the greater good.
And that’s where the finale, issue #5, of Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire titled “The Living Ghosts” picks up. Oga appears to have given up Rey to The First Order, but then pulls the double-swindle in hopes of gaining the good graces of the Resistance. After the blaster fire smoke and lightsaber sizzle subside, the Blutopian gets back to her storytelling of Luke Skywalker and General Leia in days of Batuu’s past.
The Surabat River Valley is introduced as some of the villagers are being held by a “monster.” Oga knows this story because she was there to look after her golden lichen interests in the valley. The monster is a stellamax and it has captured many miners who Luke and Leia attempt to save from a cavern strewn with cave paintings of a baby stellamax. It also activates the Jedi Relic that was chased down years ago by this crew and Darth Vader. The relic helps to subdue the stellamax and allow the rescue of the miners.
What called to the Sith and the Jedi was not a great weapon, but something else. That something is valuable enough that Dok-Ondar has a collection of the shining green objects that only glow when they are “home.”
Oga finishes her story. Rey prepares to move on. But before the aspiring Jedi takes off, she records a transmission that many guests of Galaxy’s Edge have experienced: “–the Resistance desperately needs your help in our fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order…Welcome to the cause. May the Force be with us.”
