2019’s Star Wars: Secrets of The Jedi gave us a look at the Force from the point of view of the galaxy’s protectors, packed with insights on the Force and loaded with hidden compartments, maps, images and details that made reading the book a joy. Fast forward two years and it’s the turn of the dark side as author Marc Sumerak returns with Star Wars: The Secrets of the Sith. As befits the nature of this lethal tome, the book is visibly darker, the cover a menacing miasma of reds and blues highlighting the primary dark side masters of Palpatine, Kylo Ren, Snoke, Maul, Ventress, Dooku, Oppress and of course Darth Vader.

Heading inside we’re instantly into the melee as Darth Sidious himself brings us the introduction, giving depth to Poe Dameron’s infamous line from The Rise of SkywalkerSomehow Palpatine returned’. Here, the master of all evil explains how he survived death, allowing the rebels to believe he was defeated but instead heading to the Unknown Regions to be exalted by his sith followers, sneering at the weakness and treachery of his failed Empire and growing a new force in the Sith Eternal. How from Exegol he stoked unrest and uncertainty in the New Republic until the Final Order was ready to rise. To underline that we get the first of many fold outs, the Code of the Sith. His dark recollections underway we follow the journey of Sheev Palpatine, explaining the power of the dark side while belittling the goals of the self-appointed guardians of peace and justice the Jedi, and here we delve deeper into his machinations. We read the decree that gave him emergency powers, through the Clone Wars, the rise of the Empire and of Anakin Skywalker’s son Luke. We lok at the abilities of the Sith, be they transference, Force lightning or minds tricks and the ways his followers attempted to contain his essence in failed clones and his puppet, Snoke. All a means to an end, to return to prominence and power and take back the galaxy, with the ultimate goal of transferring his essence into his granddaughter Rey….

From there we turn our attention to the other prominent Sith; Anakin Skywalker as he is seduced into losing it all and becoming Darth Vader and the rise and fall of the Skywalker family, all accompanied by posters, pull outs and extra pages. It’s a feast for the eyes, and a treasure trove of knowledge, revealing new ways at looking at information we know, but presented from a different angle. All written from Palpatine’s point of view, we look at the Rule of Two, his many dark disciples, the weapons of the sith all accompanied by gloriously evocative art by Sergio Gómez Silván from the days of the prequels right through the original trilogy and beyond, to the Knights of Ren and into the sequel trilogy and the Sith Eternal and the Final Order. There’s a glorious Wayfinder pop-up that’s entirely unexpected as we look at Sith artifacts and on to the Sith worlds of Moraband, Malachor, Mustafar and Dathomir and the two doomed Death Stars, not to mention the excavated world of Ilum that would eventually become Starkiller Base.

We end with the one thing Palpatine never truly understood; the Dyad, which would prove to be his undoing as Ben and Rey worked together to destroy Palpatine….but that’s in the future as far as this book is concerned, and finish as he prepares for a new, dark dawn that never came. A fascinating book, the perfect read for people immersing themselves in the legends surounding the Force and a tidy summary of the events that conspired to bring the galaxy to its knees over the many decades of Palpatine’s reign of terror. Highly recommended for fans both new and old.
