We arrive at the final issue of Yoda, a series that has taken us from the High Republic to the ‘present’ as we step back to the earliest issues and Yoda sitting with Bree on Turrak on the Outer Rim. Bree is showing Yoda how to play a taratti, a musical instrument, the aged Jedi claiming he’s too old to learn as Yoda pauses – the Death Star is hanging high in the sky and a Sith-eyed Anakin Skywalker looms before a red-eyed Qui-Gon attacks with his jade blade. An expolosion of light erupts as Yoda wakes with a start in his Dagobah home, and waiting for him is the Force ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Yoda isn’t in the mood to chat, and steps out to get herbs for his soup as he takes a wrong turn and finds himself at the dark cave. Kenobi wants him to go inside, Yoda doesn’t but as he says, if he has nothing to prove then he has nothing to fear.
Rattled, Yoda walks away, disturbing a huge bird-like creature and its young as he chides himself for his foolishness. Suddenly he finds Dooku, who reminds Yoda that he wouldn’t accept his saber as he tried to walk away – once a Jedi, always a Jedi. Yoda is shocked, and stumbles to fall and find the body of Yaddle, the first Jedi murdered by Dooku. The fang-toothed Dooku attacks as Keeve Trennis watches, reminding Yoda how he walked away and left her to her fate. As she hurls him into a stack of skulls he is attacked by those he failed, led by Anakin Skywalker, all blaming him as their teacher. Palpatine appears, calling Yoda ‘the greatest of all my apprentices’ and Yoda begins to fade when suddenly he hears music; and he’s back with Bree on Turrak who reminds him that failure is the greatest teacher as he pushes back, banishing all around him.
Kenobi waits, and a changed Yoda appears, holding the taratti in his hand as he tells Kenobi to go as the boy – Luke – is in danger. Kenobi knows he’s on Hoth, and before he fades away he asks if Yoda will be ready when Luke comes? Ready to teach, and to learn Yoda replies as we roll out of this fascinating series that could easily have taken the easy path of mini adventures with obvious outcomes but instead chose more interesting avenues. Superb art from Ibraim Roberson and a gripping tale from Cavan Scott makes this the perfect ending for a series that began deep in the High Republic era and brought us to the mud and dank of Dagobah. Very highly recommended.
