It’s a hungry life travelling around the galaxy, whether you’re a smuggler, a Jedi, an Imperial or a hitchhiker trying to see the galaxy on less than 30 Republic credits a day. Rations are plain, snacks unfulfilling, meals often questionable depending on your species tastes, but Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook: The Official Guide to Cooking Your Way Through the Galaxy thankfully caters to the tastebuds of races, species and gastromechs from across the galaxy. There are even considerations for those with unique dietary requirements and a measurement conversion chart so Anzellans and Hutts can enjoy the same meals. Grab a spork and napkin and let’s dive in.
Once again our chef is Strono Tuggs, better known as Cookie, who gives us a brief view of his journey so far, from his birth on Artoid Minor way out in Wild Space to working in the castle of Maz Kanata to travelling the Outer Rim to ‘feed the masses’. He’s modest, but clearly his work is important and his recipes very special indeed and while he’s aware of his very good reputation, he’s always on the lookout for more gastronomic treats, and so he flew out from Batuu in his Utilipede transport and headed for the stars, charting a path from the Outer Rim into the interior, finding ingredients and meeting races from Endor to Chandrilla. After reading his history I want a Disney Plus series as much as I want to cook up a menu, but before that let’s sample what Cookiee created.
His route took him from Core to Rim, and our tasty travels begin in the Core Worlds with a Chandrilan Cheese Board, which brings together eggs, mayo, dijon mustard, dill alongside dragonfruit, grapes olives and crackers. Yes, it’s an unusual mix and yes, it looks like something you’d order at Docking Bay 7 or sit down for in the Crown of Corellia aboard the Halcyon. There’s a snack mix, meatpies, rolls, mushrooms, chews and some sumptuous desserts, as well as drinks. Yes, they eat very well in the Core, but it’s not too shabby in the Colonies. Exotic meats and vegetables combine to bring us dishes like Byblos Squares which brings together luncheon meat, tamari, eggs and nori sheets to make a distinct looking dish that would be washed down very well with a Giju Glug, but only after a plate of Cilla Blacks favourite dish, Aromatic Loralora Wings. Finish off with a slice of Nantoon Treasure Cake and you’ll be praying for a long haul just to sleep it off.
The Inner Rim begins to see the introduction of more rustic fare as we nibble on Champala Chips or snack on Sand Mynock ‘n’ Cheese. A Bacta Slush would seem to be the right brew to chug before a bowl of Chocolate Portion Bread and maybe a Kiffu Fruit Fizz before we enter the Expansion and some mouth-watering snap. Zand and Zand Rolls, Dhanduese Drums, Roasted Acklay Claws all complimented by a long, cool glass of Haneli Flower Tea.
The Mid Rim, where Cookiee spent a century cheffing on Takodana, is our next stop and here we really start to get experimental. Sarkhai Crisps sprinkled with Japanese Red pepper flakes, Hocekureem Filets, Fruit Jelly (a signature dish of Tono) and Kybe Scones, with the hard-edged kick of Spiced Jybbuk Juice. Travelling through the Mid Rim is always an experience as travellers hear Rimward or into the Interior, but the food is often overlooked. What is definitely oiverlooked are the food and drink of Hutt Space, and there are some surprising entries here. Pickled Paddy Flowers (cucumber in salt, sugar and vinegar) Shag Pabol Pasta, named for the regions most infamous hyperspace lane that starts at Nal Hutta and ends at Teth. Try some fresh Dandoran Salad and a Yocola Azalus and you’re ready for the Outer Rim.
It’s well known how life on the Rim can be tough, ekeing a living from the environment to make ends meet. What’s underappreciated is how a few simple recipes can bring together some satisfying meals. Honey Hive Spears from Geonosis and Cloud City Bread from Bespin sit well in a platter with Greater Cake Tree Stacks from Saleucami (sliced baguette, tomatoes, basil leaves, sliced mozzarella, balsamic and pepper) and maybe a very topical dish, Dathomirian Noodles along with a Thuris Caf or from Batuu a Seezelslak’s Speciality concocted from cantaloupe, coconut water, granulated sugar, lime zest and a mint leaf.
We wrap up this stomach-swelling oddesey with a trip to Wild Space and the Unknown Regions. Most inhabitants of the galaxy won’t have travelled to these areas of space, and so won’t be familiar with their unique brand of cooking, but being from Artoid Minor in Wild Space Tono is well versed with the ingredients required to make some very special meals. Lira San Crackers from the homeworld of the Lasat, Hanava Pods which bring together edamame, minced garlic cloves, salt, sugar and red pepper flakes to make a spicy snack, Green Milk Cheesecakes from Ahch-To, made from the freshly-squeezed milk of the Thala Siren and a refreshing Hyperspace Brew.
As with all of the cookbooks so far, there’s fun to be had for curious chefs who want to give the dishes a try and folks who enjoy these trips through the galaxy as we pick up tidbits of information about the worlds the population of the Star Wars galaxy live in. Hugely enjoyable and mouth-watering at the same time, if this doesn’t have you heading for the galley to rustle up something tasty, nothing will.
