It appears that the soft sales for Star Wars Outlaws may have stymied any hopes for a sequel, a shame for a corner of the franchise with such broad scope after the hopes of an open world experience for gamers when Outlaws was announced. On a recent episode of the Insider Gaming podcast, Tom Henderson claimed that the Ubisoft had cancelled a potential sequel.
With Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot saying earlier this month that Star Wars Outlaws had underperformed, a new report indicates that the company originally had plans for a sequel. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson said in a recent episode of the publication’s podcast that the company had recently cancelled a potential sequel.
It is worth noting that, even according to Henderson’s sources, the sequel was quite early in development and hadn’t even entered the full production phase yet. The game was likely cancelled while it was still in pre-production after the overall poor reception to Star Wars Outlaws. “They also recently canceled Star Wars Outlaws 2, because that was planned and in the works,” said Henderson. “It didn’t enter production, as far as I know, it wasn’t set in stone.”
In regards to the first game and its lower than hoped for sales numbers, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot gave his opinion on the sales of Star Wars Outlaws.
As reported by Insider Gaming, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot was met with several questions about the struggling sales of Star Wars Outlaws at a recent shareholder meeting. The company didn’t name any specific goal for the game, but he did confirm that “For Star Wars Outlaws, we didn’t reach our sales targets.” As to why, Guillemot claimed, “The game suffered from a number of items. First, it suffered from the fact that it was released at a time when the brand, the brand that it belonged to was in a bit of choppy waters. And the game had a few items that still needed to be polished, and they were polished and debugged in the early weeks, but it did affect sales volumes.”
As always, this is rumour until it’s officially announced, but right now it seems Outlaws could do with some much needed health points to change its future.
