5 Things You Should Know About Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders has mesmerized audiences for a decade with its spectacular (and brutal) sets and 20th-century aesthetic. The 2013 TV series follows Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his ruthless gang as they travel through England in the years between the two world wars.

There were complications in the production of the acclaimed series. How did the makers stack up against other popular historical dramas, such as Downton Abbey? How did the show’s leading man feel about his iconic hairstyle?

The sixth and final season is live; viewers can stream peaky blinder in NZ or any other country on Netflix. We’ve gathered five interesting facts about Peaky Blinders just in anticipation of the debut of the final season.

5 Fun Facts Regarding Peaky Blinders.

1)     Inspiration from reality

The Shelby Dynasty and its imprint on the real-world politics of the time are the fiction of show creator Steven Knight. However, many of the characters and events of Peaky Blinders are undoubtedly based on facts.

Nevertheless, the Peaky Blinders were a real gang that flourished in Birmingham in the 1920s. The Peaky Blinders were a gang that emerged from the slums of industrial Britain. They operated in the country until the 1930s, when the Italian-English Sabini gang primarily replaced them.

The struggle of the two sides is fictionally dramatized in the second season of Peaky Blinders, with a markedly different resolution for the Shelby family than their real-life counterparts. You can also check out the review of other films and TV shows.

2)     Peaky Blinders’ hairstyle is disgusting

Cillian Murphy, The protagonist of Peaky Blinders, is known for many things, including their distinctive hairstyles. The hairstyle adopted by the prominent male members of the Shelby family during the program represented the program and its fandom.

Cillian Murphy, who plays Thomas Shelby, is one person who disagrees with the hairstyle. Murphy sported the hairstyle for all five seasons of the hit TV show but has said in countless interviews that he doesn’t like it and doesn’t understand its fascination.

Murphy (in an interview with Metro) correctly noted that the reason this hairstyle was so popular among the lower classes of Britain at the time had nothing to do with style or image and was instead due to the prevalence of lice.

3)     The Weinstein Company logo was removed from the opening and segments of the show

American viewers could detect the Weinstein Company insignia in the credits in the first three seasons of the BBC series. Although the Weinstein Company was not involved in the creation of the show, it was involved in its distribution in the United States, so its logo appeared in the show’s credits as a production card.

However, following the Harvey Weinstein controversy, the program sought to eliminate its association with the Weinstein Company (via Deadline).

The Weinstein Company branding disappeared beginning in the fourth season and was retroactively removed from the credits for the first three seasons in the United States.

4)     Cillian Murphy would not have a role if the program were staged in America

It’s hard to dispute that Peaky Blinders protagonist Cillian Murphy is a major factor in the production’s success, despite all the other factors at play. However, in an alternate reality, the Irish actor would not appear on the show at all.

Murphy claimed that if the show had been produced in America, he would have refused to participate in an interview with Birmingham Live.

Murphy cited the rigidity of American television production, the extended contracts artists must sign, and the length of commitment required of actors as reasons he would turn down the show. Learn more about Cillian Murphy’s interview.

You have to subscribe to at least 12 episodes a year,” he said. “You don’t have time for other activities… I couldn’t deal with the prohibition of different shows; I couldn’t do it.

5)     The show caused the rise of specific identities

The prevalence of particular names is another critical indicator of Peaky Blinders’ impact on popular culture. Since the show first aired, several fans have named their newborns after their favourite characters. Like Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders has triggered the rebirth of some names.

The moniker Arthur entered the top ten boys’ names for the first time since the 1920s in 2018, according to the UK Deed Poll Office (when the first season of Peaky Blinders takes place).

For the first time in almost a century, the name Ada also made it into the top 100 girls’ names. The current boom in the popularity of these names can be directly attributed to the series.

Final thoughts

Peaky Blinders is a sophisticated and thought-provoking series that makes us think about morality and the ambiguity between good and evil. The show is interesting because it is difficult to watch it without thinking. If you haven’t watched the block blaster series yet, you’re missing out on a masterpiece.
