As a lifelong player of the games, We are very eager for a new fandom to dive into the narrative of Joel and Ellie after watching the premiere of HBO’s The Last of Us.

Episode 1 Difference

Sarah Is Given More Time

Joel And Tess’s Partnership

The series here is a bit different from the game. The audience sees Tess and Joel as more than smuggling partners. They share a living space and bed and appear to be in a domestic relationship.

A major fall between Tomy and Joel is seen in the game. Joel does not care much about Tommy’s safety. Meanwhile, in the show, they remain in touch a little bit.

Joel, Tess, And Ellie In The Hotel

After making a decision to go together on the journey, the squad takes entry into a luxury hotel. This scene is a bit different from the game. Originally, after Tess’ death, Joel and Ellie entered a hotel.

Attack On Museum

In the show and game, Ellie, Tess, and Joel find a way through the Museum and encounter Clickers there. The change here is that during an attack, Ellie gets bit.

Episode 3 Difference

Joel’s Explanation Of The Outbreak

Ellie asks more about the outbreak. Joel, without being personal, tells Ellie about the world’s destruction. He explains about people becoming ill, biting, and disease outbreaks.

We Meet Frank

Players never see Frank in the game, but we get to meet him at the start of the show’s episode 3.

Romantic Relationship Between Frank And Bill

It was obvious that Bill and Frank were more than survival partners without being told about it. HBO extended their love story to let people see how both men love each other and go on with their lives.

 

Episode 4 Difference

Ellie Practices With Her Gun

Episode 4 starts with Ellie, who is practicing with her gun, which she picked from Bill’s house. Meanwhile, in the game, her first gun encounter happens when she picks up the dropped weapon to rescue Joel.

Ellie And Joel Spend A Night In The Forest

They make a stop in the woods to get some sleep. The scene also takes place in the game, but players never see it. At the same time, some glimpses are given in the show about how their evening goes when they decide to take a rest in the woods.

Sam And Henry Prowl On Ellie And Joel

The encounter between Henry and Sam by Joel and Ellie happens by chance. In the show, Ellie and Joel sit down for a night in the building. Sam and Henry wake them up at gunpoint.

 

Episode 5 Differences

Sam Cannot Hear

The Last of Us HBO version shows Sam as deaf and interacting with his brother through sign language. With others, he communicates through writing on a notepad. However, it is different from the game where Sam is able to listen.

No Infected Near Ish’s Place

The game version shows infection in the tunnel and Ish’s refuge. In the show, there are rumours of tunnel infection, but they are not in actuality.

Confrontation With Kathleen

The game version shows a confrontation in the residential area between the hunters, Sam, Henry, Joel, Ellie, and the infected. But in the show, Kathleen comes up for Henry’s encounter.

Episode 6 Differences

Joel Has Panic Attacks

Joel faces issues while breathing when they leave the couple’s house. To regain his breathing momentum, he stops for a while. This incident takes place multiple times in episode 6.

Joel And Ellie Camp Overnight

Players never saw Joel and Ellie camping in the woods in the game. However, the show’s audience sees them talking at night about things they will do after his journey. But they go in separate directions.

Tommy And Maria Are Becoming Parents

This scene happened in the bar. When Tommy is asked by Joel to take Ellie to find Fireflies, Tommy shares the news of becoming a father.

 

Episode 7 Differences

Joel Tells Ellie To Go

The Joel of the game version is hurt by Ellie. She has to make decisions on her own. However, the show’s story is a bit different. Joel loves Ellie so much that he can die for her safety.

We See Ellie In School

The game version shows Ellie in the bedroom. In the series, she is seen in the gym and in the officer’s office.

Ellie Doesn’t Leave The House

In the game, Ellie looks for medication in the mall, while in the show, she searches for supplies for the house.

 

Episode 8 Differences

David Delivers A Sermon

In the HBO series, David is a group leader and a preacher. He uses religion to control everyone. He is eviler in the show than in the game.

We See More Of David’s Group

David’s group is more visible in the show than in the game. The game version depicts David’s group more like an obstacle.

David’s Group Captures Ellie Quickly

In the game, Ellie kills a lot of David’s group before he manages to catch her. She tries to get away on horseback in the show.
