In a week where Bob Iger steps down as Disney CEO and Steven Spielberg walks away from directing Indiana Jones 5, news filters through that James Mangold, the man who might be replacing Spielberg in the directors chair and Robert Rodriguez, an innovator in the arena of VFX as well as a prolific director of action films could both be directing season 2 episodes of The Mandalorian.

According to a new rumor from Star Wars centered Black Series Rebels podcast, directors James Mangold and Robert Rodriguez may be joining The Mandalorian. Robert Rodriguez is a filmmaker who is primarily known as an R-rated action film director. Robert Rodriguez’s filmography has included films like From Dusk Till Dawn, Once Upon a Time In Mexico and, most recently, Alita: Battle Angel. While Robert Rodriguez’s resume may not appear to be the most family-friendly, the director has worked on several films that could be interpreted as modern westerns. A common observation of The Mandalorian is that the Star Wars series is more like a space western so handing over an episode to Robert Rodriguez may not be all that farfetched of an idea.

More interestingly, director James Mangold was also mentioned as a potential director. Like Robert Rodriguez, James Mangold’s filmography likewise has a lot of hard, R-Rated films in it. However, the director was signed on to direct a Boba Fett film for Lucasfilm. Like many of the other Star Wars spinoff films, however, the Boba Fett film was scrapped after Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed at the box office and Star Wars projects began to shift towards Disney+. James Mangold is also in talks to replace Steven Spielberg for Indiana Jones 5.
