The Acolyte is coming our way sometime this year – perhaps as soon as early June of Collider are correct – and speaking with Magazine C, series star Amandla Stenberg discussed her own fandom and her journey to being in the hotly anticipated show.
“I was a huge nerd growing up. Like, all I did was read sci-fi and fantasy, so I think there’s something about being able to be a part of the Star Wars universe that feels like a strange culmination of, like, the progression of my life, especially like one of my first big jobs having been in the sci-fi world in The Hunger Games.
My favorite character in the Star Wars galaxy is Padme because she’s just that girl, you know, she’s so intelligent, articulate, educated, sexy. She’s such a leader and decisionmaker and also, like, I love the fashion. [laughs]
The first person who comes to mind when I think of a Jedi in my career is Spike Lee. When I was about 18, he gave me his number and he said “I’m your uncle now.” [laughs] He is Jedi … I mean down to his garb.
If I had my own droid … I’m so fascinated by AI as we get to witness its progression, with its sentience, and so, so fascinating for me to talk to these algorithms and see, like, what they can emotionally comprehend because sometimes it’s really advanced. So I feel like I’d be the kind of person who would use my Droid as my therapist.
There are so many lessons tha you can learn from the Star Wars galaxy, so many powerful lessons around power, around how power corrupts, how we contend with (and also accept) the dark and light parts of ourselves. Star Wars is jam-packed with allegories and what I love so much about it is that you can take the one that’s the most important to you.
Have I ever felt the Force? You know, there was something kind of supernatural happening with me, I feel like, when I first started working on Star Wars. I remember having this overwhelming tingling sensation over my whole body when I first got off of the job. I think the Force is allowing what is meant to be channeled through you and I felt like that was a sign for me that this is what I was supposed to do.”
We know Amandla listens to Star Wars podcasts, but does she listen to Fantha Tracks Radio? Who knows, but be sure to stay tuned as we start our coverage of Hoth Strikes Back from Finse in Norway here on the site, socials and Fantha Tracks TV.
