Designated a UNESCO site on 18th September 2023, the 10th-century Amghar Mosque was repainted by a pair of British tourists on 13th November 2024, using red clay paint and completely changing the original look of the site that was used as the original exterior to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hut until the 1997 Special Edition. Galaxy Tours takes a closer look at this frustrating situation which has seen a UNESCO site and a Star Wars filming location defaced.
The Association pour la sauvegarde de l’île de Djerba (ASSIDJE: Association for the Safeguarding of the Island of Djerba) had this to say.
“This issue is being addressed with the highest level of dedication by all the official organizations on the island. Such actions stand in stark contrast to our vision for our heritage, inspiring us to intensify our efforts to safeguard it and protect it from such reprehensible acts.”
