Following the Yellow Thread Roles

While Donald Glover’s persona Childish Gambino is often seen bare chested, other roles, such as the comedic innocence of Troy Barnes in Community or smuggling suave as Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, tend to see him wrapped up. The latter two characters bringing us nicely to this article’s subject.

During Donald’s performance as Troy Barnes in the Season 2 24th Episode of Community ‘For a Few Paintballs More’, viewers are treated to a spectacle which is heavily inspired by Star Wars pop culture. In this two-part fest, Troy is dressed in cowboy garb as a nod to Cleavon Little’s Sheriff Bart from Mel Brooks western comedy Blazing Saddles.

A few years later, or in a galaxy far, far away, whichever you prefer, Donald portrays the younger Lando in Star Wars stand-alone story Solo. While Lando enjoys an extensive and flamboyant wardrobe aboard his lady – the Millennium Falcon – the threads which caught my attention was his fetching yellow shirt.

While this might just be coincidence, part of me wonders if this choice of colour might be a subtle homage back to his Troy Barnes outfit in the Star Wars influenced Community episode. Kind of bringing us full circle, or perhaps more of an Easter Egg shape.
