Which Star Wars trilogy could Spaceballs 2 parody?

With the original Spaceballs almost 40 years in the past, and a LOT of Star Wars content having come in the intervening years, it’s fair to anticipate that some loving nods and nudges from the modern era could crop up in Spaceballs 2, but writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez are giving nothing away, saying that anything that’s happened since the original is ‘fair game‘.

“It’s a provocative question,” the writers said. “I could point you in the direction of the teaser trailer that we released, where that gives you an indication of where our brains were.” The video shared earlier this year featured a classic Star Wars opening crawl, running through the many developments of the universe since the first film, with some classic Brooksian humor. However, it also leans into the sequel trilogy more than anything, between Moranis’s broken helmet and the line “The Schwartz awakens in 2027.” While everything may be pointing in one direction, though, Samit and Hernandez emphasized that there’s no limit to what they could parody. “I think it’s fair to say that anything that has happened since the original Spaceballs is fair game.”

You can hear from Dan and Benji next week when we catch up with them to discuss their work on LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past.
