All Star Wars fans know that the epic film franchise is life, but there is only a certain amount of times you can watch the Lucasfilm movies before you find yourself wanting more. Luckily, for these occasions, there are numerous Star Wars games designed to transport players directly into the epic space action. Since the release of A New Hope in 1977, there have been more than fifty game titles for various consoles. But recently, there have been issues surrounding the potential release of console games in the Battlefront series from Electronic Arts. In light of this development, we ask, what does the future hold for fans of Star Wars games?
Issues Surrounding Games Beyond Battlefront 2
Prior to the release of Star Wars: Battlefront 2, developers Electronic Arts had announced plans to go beyond the sequel and create many more offerings in the series. Battlefront 2 had been a long anticipated continuation of the EA series after the somewhat disappointing Star Wars: Battlefront in 2015. Players were excited to discover the original storyline in the 2017 title which took place in the Star Wars universe and bridged the events between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
Unfortunately, there was controversy surrounding the action shooter prior to its release. Gamers tried to boycott the game and convince others to steer clear of it. This is was because of the loot box system within the game. Players were able to use money to buy in-game currency known as crystals. They could then exchange these for loot boxes which contained upgrades and character enhancements. It was found that those who paid money were at a major advantage compared to players who didn’t. It also emerged that to unlock a character like Darth Vader it would cost around $70.
In addition to this, the 2017 title didn’t fare well with critics. It garnered mixed reviews on Metacritic, with the lowest being 0.8/10. Most feedback focused on the fact that the progression system within the game hindered players and ultimately made it an unsatisfying experience.
Could there be Smaller Spinoffs?

Despite there being uncertainty around the Battlefront games, there is no worry of there being a halt of releases in the Star Wars universe. With so many successful games over the years, there is enough proof for developers that there is always money to be made with this franchise.
The two sectors most likely to get new Star Wars games are the mobile market and online casinos. A lot of franchises nowadays choose to spread over to these platforms because they are both flourishing and attract a high number of players. According to Betway, the number of online slot games based on popular movie franchises such as the Marvel Universe is on the rise. There have already been Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, and Fantastic Four slots, as well as slots based on other movies such as the Dark Knight. Some would say it was high time there was a Star Wars offering. All the aforementioned movies have also been immortalised as mobile games. There are a number of popular Iron Man apps on the market, including Iron Man 3 from Gameloft. In this title, players complete missions and research new technology to build suits. There are a lot of Star Wars games on the mobile market as well, with Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes one of the bestselling options. Fans should expect more to come.
Jedi: Fallen Order Definitely on its way
According to reports, gamers will definitely be treated to a huge console title in the near future. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was announced at E3 this year, and the game will be developed by Respawn Entertainment. EA is the publishing company behind the project, and they didn’t give away many details at the huge gaming event. There were no screenshots or gaming videos, as the title is still in its embryonic stages. But this hasn’t stopped some details leaking to the public accompanied by a healthy dose of fan speculation.
In Jedi: Fallen Order, players will assume the identity of Padawan, a Jedi who survived the attack of Order 66. The game will be set after the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and slightly before the timeline of the first ever Star Wars movie. This was when the Empire was in its early stages. The game will be a single-player third-person action adventure, which is likely to be an open world epic set in the Star Wars universe. There has never been a massive scale Star Wars game so this is a hugely exciting prospect. This can be expected to drop at Christmas 2019, around the same time as the final instalment of the rebooted movie franchise.
With already such a huge library of Star Wars games, there is no doubt that there will be more to come for many years. The Battlefront series may not be continuing, but that might not exactly be a bad thing. Jedi: Fallen Order is likely to blow everything that’s come before out of the water.
