Spanish artist Carlos Ezquerra, the man behind the drawing pen of Mara Jade: By The Emperor’s Hand and Boba Fett 1/2: Salvage has passed away age 70. One of the genius talents behind the early success of UK comic 2000AD, Ezquerra was best known for drawing Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Durham Red and in the Star Wars galaxy another red, Mara Jade.

Diagnosed with lung cancer a decade ago, Ezquerra regularly worked alongside John Wagner. The team created Strontium Dog for Starlord magazine, before merging into 2000AD. Bleeding Cool take a look at his career, and the many tributes already paid to this titan of the genre.

While his Star Wars art was undoubtedly superb, I can’t think of a better tribute to Ezquerra than posting this classic image of Judge Dredd and Johnny Alpha from the end of Judgment Day, about to head out across the radlands.
