The Star Wars x DC crossover from Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek was almost a reality

With Hope Assembles on our doorstep, bringing the worlds of Marvel and Star Wars together, it’s sobering to think that a few years ago we could have been reading a very similar series, but substituting heroes from the Marvel Universe with those of the DC Universe. According to a recent post by artist Alex Ross (a man whose work Star Wars fans will be very familiar with thanks to his time doing covers at Dark Horse), Lucasfilm and DC almost did a team up a number of years ago, with Kurt Busiek on writing duties, but financial differences meant the numbers never quite stacked up to the satisfaction of both sides.

So why didn’t it ever happen? According to Ross, they couldn’t come to an agreement on how the profits would break down between Warner Bros. and Lucasfilm. Obviously, this is not a problem that the upcoming Marvel/Star Wars crossover has to contend with, because Disney owns both Lucasfilm and Marvel. But with DC Comics and Marvel doing crossovers again in a big way, who knows what the future holds? If it does happen, we certainly hope Alex Ross gets to be the artist to do it. We’d love to see the power of Darkseid and the power of the dark side try to take down the Justice League.
