Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian

Official summary: An unexpected ally emerges.

Trivia

As expected, Din Djarin makes his appearance in the episode. He still has the beskar spear and the Darksaber.

Kaba Baiz is the bounty he is hunting with his tracking fob. Baiz is played by stunt performer Ardeshir Radpour. Din confronts the Klatooinian in a meat processing plant, which brings to mind Satriale’s Pork Store from ‘The Sopranos’. But such legal fronts for illegal businesses have been used often enough in crime series and movies. The end credits concept art shows that something different was originally planned to hang on the meat hooks: the heads of an unknown creature. This creature does not match similar creatures like the Jerba and Rycrits (they do not have horns), and the horns of a tauntaun is smaller. The creature does seem to echo the Mythosaur signet.

Din repeats his warm or cold line from The Mandalorian – Chapter 1.

The ringed space station appears to be called Glavis, as the end credits mentions a ‘Glavis Caskadag’ performed by Chris Bartlett. This is most likely the one who shared the elevator with Din. Glavis brings to mind such ringed space stations as the ones surrounding Ringo Vinda, Mon Cala and Kuat. It also looks it was inspired by the one seen in the movie ‘Elysium’.

On Glavis we see a very large Chadra-Fan, who are more commonly depicted with an average height of 1 meter. Also visible is a Quarren, a Theelin and an Ishi Tib (the Guild Master, voiced by Helen Sadler, performance artist Safiya Fredericks). Ishi Tibs were among the many new species that Return of the Jedi introduced and appeared from time to time in other movies and The Clone Wars and once in Rebels.

After Nevarro the Mandalorian convert of the Armorer has been greatly reduced in numbers, and only she and Paz Vizsla have made it to their new hide-out on Glavis.

Paz Viszla seems to be using some kind of bacta spray on the wounds of Din. Din also received bacta spray in The Mandalorian – Chapter 8.

While the dialogue in this scene repeats what we know of the Darksaber, it does clears up some of the confusion caused by Rebels.

Moff Gideon is mentioned to have been taken away into New Republic custody, and is going to face the New Republic Tribunal. This was first introduced in the novel ‘Aftermath: Life Debt’, but with the ‘New’ part missing.

Myths foretold of the mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore.” – Is this a hint of what is going to happen next in the series with Boba Fett as his signet is a mythosaur?

The Armorer mentions that their sect was cloistered on the moon of Concordia. Concordia appears in The Clone Wars.

The Night Of A Thousand Tears has been mentioned a fair few of times in The Mandalorian, and is shown now for the first time. The appearance of it matches what we have seen before of Mandalore in The Clone Wars.

KX-series security droids, aided by Viper probe droids, mop up any survivors after the bombardments from the TIE Bombers. The way this is depicted recalls The Terminator movies in which we always have such a scene with the robots destroying the last of humankind.

The following Mando’a words are spoken during Din’s training with the Darksaber: Solus, t’ad, ehn and cuir. They mean one, two, three and four, used to note the various stances common to this kind of fighting.

Din admits to having taken off his helmet before, which we saw him do twice in The Mandalorian. Armorer decrees he is no longer a Mandalorian, and can only be redeemed for that in the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore. Only those are destroyed. Paz calls Din an apostate; apostasy means the formal disaffiliation from, abandonment of, or renunciation of a religion by a person. But while they seem to think him as such, later Din still calls himself a Mandalorian and that it is his religion.

As he boards a shuttle to Tatooine a female Snivvian can be seen. The shuttle is operated by Star Liner Travel, and sadly not Star Tours.

As he lands on Tatooine, the typical hangars at Mos Eisley can be seen. But also the gates that Ralph McQuarrie designed for the planet way back for Return of the Jedi. These gates have appeared since then in many other places (TCW and The Force Awakens among them), but are now finally seen on Tatooine where they were meant for.

At Pelli Motto’s we can see a BD explorer droid, who debuted in the game ‘Jedi: Fallen Order’.

While repairing the N-1 starfighter many technical items are mentioned: Turbonic venture power assimilator, vapour manifold, J-type pulse engines and a cryogenic density combustion booster. Only the J-type pulse engines have been mentioned before, as the J-type Nubian 221 sublight engines. The cryogenic density combustion booster is new in name, but has been around since 1977, as the pole that Han and Leia were using to brace the walls of the trash compactor with on the Death Star.

Pelli mentions that Jawas are furry, which is an often enough overlooked fact, but they do have fur sticking out of their sleeves in A New Hope.

Skud in a krill pond.” Krill ponds are found on Sorgan.

The dragon-like creature crowing like a rooster looks a lot like the sand bat. Sand bats, also known as dragonbats, were mentioned in Legends in the comic ‘Star Wars #17’, and appeared for the first time in the game ‘The Old Republic’. In the canon they returned as a mention in the short story ‘Rites’, published in ‘From a Certain Point of View’.

Din’s, and ours, favourite curse Dank Farrik can be heard twice as he test drives his new N-1. During this test drive he flies quite a bit of The Phantom Menace’s podrace course.

Also seen is a critter running away as he flies over it. This is most likely meant to be the womp rat. The art in the end credits show that this was also the same creature that attacked Motto’s BD droid earlier in the episode.

The New Republic’s X-wings are piloted by Lt Reed (played by Max Lloyd-Jones) and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee returns once again as Captain Carson Teva.

Kitster would approve of Din rating his flying experience as ‘Wizard’.
