Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger
Official summary: Mysteries are explored and Boba Fett learns information.
Trivia
Cobb Vanth, as played by Timothy Olyphant, makes his return after being first seen in The Mandalorian – Chapter 9: The Marshal. It is a classic western standoff between him and the Pykes. Neither the Pyke Guard nor the Pyke Courier are listed in the end credits with their performers.
The unknown green planet where Din meets up with Artoo, Luke and Grogu was at least partially filmed as a small set standing at the Manhattan Beach set complex.
On the left you can see the door to the Mos Espa City Hall from earlier episodes.
Artoo uses his radar that we see him use in The Empire Strikes Back on Hoth to scan for Luke.
The ant droids are building the Jedi Temple that we saw in flashbacks in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
A Sorgan frog hops by Grogu and becomes part of his training. After their introduction in The Mandalorian, they also appeared in The Book of Boba Fett – Chapter 4: The Gathering Storm.
Every parent may recognize the ‘pulling the standing still kid along by his arms, causing the kid to leap’-move. Luke does the same, but he uses the Force to do so.
When Luke speaks about Yoda, John William’s Yoda theme can be heard.
In Grogu’s flashback we see Operation: Knightfall, the clones attacking the Jedi Temple to execute Order 66. The three Jedi are all unnamed sadly and appear to have been newly created. Two of these are performed by Scott Lang and Graham Hamilton. The third, the Jedi in the middle, was probably one of the three stunt performers listed but it is uncertain which of the three it was.
Also, you can spot the crest of Barriss Offee on the door to the right of the Jedi. So this takes place just outside of her room. Easter egg? Or nod to something upcoming?
The lightsaber prop we see falling on the floor is an entirely new one, not even made from the parts from Savi’s Workshop at Galaxy’s Edge. It seems to have been inspired by the lightsabers used by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Speculation: Since it is not cost-effective to build just one prop for a short flashback, does that mean we get to see this lightsaber and its wielder again? And maybe then in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series in flashbacks? Or will we see this Jedi more in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, in an extended flashback memory of Grogu?
When Din says that he did not expected to see Ahsoka there, he probably echoes quite a bunch of fans. Ahsoka is indeed an old friend of the family, and this makes one wonder what she told Luke about her training with Anakin.
Many parallels to Luke’s training on Dagobah appear in the episode. From Luke carrying Grogu around in a backpack, to the “You’re trying too hard. Don’t try. Do.” line and the flip he makes while running.
The Jawas carry on their sandcrawler the skull of a krayt dragon. It is implied to be the same one from The Mandalorian – Chapter 9: The Marshal.
The end credits list the name of the Deputy as Scott and was played by J.J Dashnaw, who previously was the full armor body double for Temuera’s Boba. While Deputy Scott is new, the Weequay proprietor and Jo are not and were also seen in The Mandalorian – Chapter 9: The Marshal.
What is also new is the name of the town, it is no longer called Mos Pelgo, but Freetown, as it was in Aftermath by Chuck Wendig.
And while Cobb may not recognize the Stranger, who never gives his name, we all do. Cad Bane is performed by Dorian Kingi and once again voiced by Corey Burton. This is by far the first time we saw a duel with Cad Bane in classic western style and will probably not be the last one either in this series.
This episode also shows that Luke somehow came into the possession of Yoda’s lightsaber. Which is a story left untold for now, but the last time we saw the lightsaber was when Yoda had to leave it behind on Coruscant in the Senate building after his battle with Darth Sidious. In the comic Darth Vader (2017 series) #01 we see Mas Amedda burning a bunch of lightsabers, one of which that Palpatine and Darth Vader refer to as Yoda’s lightsaber in private. So if this was not a fake, and if the comic still stands as canon and is not overwritten now, then the words that Matt Martin of the Story Group spoke about back when the comic came out, still holds true for now: “A 900 year old Jedi has probably had more than a few sabers in his life.”
And considering that Yoda was a digital creation in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, this also means that his lightsaber was never a physical prop, as it is now.
