You know you’re at a good show when everyone you chat to, be it fan or guest, makes a point of saying how much they’re enjoying the event, and that’s something that happens constantly at Wales Comic Con, and for good reason. Utilising the excellent Telford International Center, a location with nearby parking and a 5 minute walk from a very handy shopping area, Wales Comic Con is in a very small cadre of big events that feel like they are run by folks who understand the fan experience and make the best effort to send visitors away with plenty of smiles and loads of great memories. You can’t commend that enough but this isn’t a paid presentation, it’s a review of Wales Comic Con and this running of the event was certainly one to remember.
Attending the show with my Fantha Tracks Radio colleagues Paul Naylor and Carl Bayliss and Fantha contributor Jonathan Hipkiss, we were soon inside the pleasantly warm venue and walking the show floor, taking in not only the numerous stands and stalls packed with collectibles and artwork (and criminally tasty fudge and brownies) but also a slew of great costumers. Of course, our eyes always turn to costumes from the galaxy far, far away and at this there was plenty to see.
Artwork is always a prominent sight at Wales Comic Con and this year was no exception, with stalls loaded with great artwork from across the galaxy…and of course, stall after stall of Funko Pops.
While occasionally using three halls, this year the show used two, and despite not being as large as in previous years there was no lack of things to do, see and buy. Busy all day (we attended on the Sunday), there were folks to chat with, as we did with our friends in the Rebel Legion and Topps artist Jay Manchand, who’s artwork just gets better and better.
Guests from the Star Wars galaxy were there both days, with Joonas Suotamo, Danny Trejo, Indira Varma, the delightful Vivian Lyra Blair (stay tuned for more with Vivian), John Fensom, Alan Ruscoe along with Pasul Kasey and Silas Carson who you’ll be hearing very soon on Fantha Tracks Radio. Wales always makes sure to bring guests from the GFFA and this running of the show was no exception.
Be sure to check out more great images from the event by visiting Jonathan Goldsmith and checking out his superb Flickr folders, and we end the review with this image of our very own Carl Bayliss, who travelled all the way to Telford just to chew on his Press pass. it’s the simple pleasures.
