Not only is being a Star Wars fan a full time endeavour, it’s also a hungry business, so the arrival of Star Wars: Galactic Baking: The Official Cookbook of Sweet and Savory Treats From Tatooine, Hoth, and Beyond from Insight Editions couldn’t be better timed. As we await all the treats coming our way from Lucasfilm and countdown the days to Celebration Anaheim next year, what better way than to cook up a storm and get creative with recipies that literally cover the galaxy.
As with most cookery books, the recipies are broken down into logical portions. There are Dessert Worlds, Frozen Worlds, Green Worlds, Cities and Space Stations and Swamp, Volcano and Mineral Worlds, separated into three different types of dish; Lightspeed recipies that take anything up to 30 minutes, the rich and indulgent Dark Side recipies and low calorie, healthy Light Side recipies. It even gives you a list of the best bakery tools to use (sadly no hydrospanners are required). Get all of those and an empty kitchen and you’re away.
There really is a Kanata’s kitchen of great food in here. Jakku Junkyard Treats cover broken cereals and snack chips in pumpkin spice for a very rustic looking snackable, while Chance Cube Cakes roll into town with enough flavour to make even Watto smile. Sith Cookies look like they were picked and delivered hot from the lava shores of Mustafar while TIE Fighter Ice Cream Sandwiches look ready to launch into maws across the galaxy.
Put it this way, if someone doesn’t bake a Life Day Cake and share it at a social at the next Celebration, I’ll be very disappointed. This is a hugely fun, beautifully photographed and designed book that will sit very proudly next to the other Star Wars cookery releases and the team behind it should be very proud….one minor quibble though; this isn’t going to help the collective post-Corona diet plans one bit.
