For a franchise that’s been around since late 1976, the Star Wars galaxy has never enjoyed the daily growth and expansion that it does today. Years past the last Skywalker Saga film, with the next big screen adventure still a handful away, the Star Wars story flourishes on the small screen and in novels, computer games and comics. Every day something new is announced or celebrated, while behind the scenes new adventures are being filmed, coded or written, ready to spring on an unsuspecting public months, sometimes years down the line. How can you ever hope to keep track of this kind of information? You could start with Today in Star Wars History: Part 1 – January Through June, the first book from Skywalking Through Neverland’s Richard Woloski who has judiciously researched a dazzling array of dates and facts to pull together a detailed timeline of key GFFA events from the very dawn of the saga right through to the present day. Wisely, Richard chose to focus on the first six months of each year, meaning this is a coffee table book rather than a fully-fledged carbonite block.

Open the pages and you are immediately thrown into the galaxy far, far away but from an enjoyably personable point of view. Throughout the book there are images taken by Richard and his ‘sweetie wife’ Sarah, giving the book a charmingly familial tone while remaining focused on the material. Day by day we move through winter, spring and into the summer months, hitting key dates in the Star Wars calendar and covering a wide variety of topics. 1st March 2022 is the day Galactic Starcruiser opened – with an image taken by Sarah, showing just how up-to-date this first edition is – while my own birthday 31st March sees the birth of Ewan McGregor in 1971, The Empire Strikes Back winning two Oscars at the 53rd Academy Awards in 1981 and the release in 2004 of the 14th chapter of the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars micro series. Pick a date – something important in the Star Wars galaxy happened, and with the page edges helpfully separating the six months and images within taken by Richard, Sarah, Brian Sims and other friends you have a very handy tome that will be very helpful sitting next to the desk of any Star Wars content creator.

I was fortunate enough to read an early version of the book and a glance at the back cover will reveal my words and thoughts. That said, having read the full book for myself (and I’d like to think having enough integrity to write my honest feelings on any given release) I stand by those words. This really is a treat for trivia fans and a very handy book to keep near when confirming dates and details. Roll on the second part bringing us July to December, and congratulations to Richard for getting the ‘book monkey’ off his back and finally seeing his work out there in the world.
