The first volume of Today In Star Wars History took us from January to June, delving into every asteroid field and hyperspace lane of the saga from the earliest moments of the series right up to the modern day. Of course, no bookcase would be complete without a second volume to cover the vital months of July to December, and thankfully author Richard Woloski was way ahead of the curve bringing us this second, equally impressive release to dip into the other (no, not Leia) six months of the calendar.
As with that first impresive volume, the second book is a warm, welcoming read. Opening with a Foreword from former Star Wars Insider editor Dan Madsen, it’s crafted by a team (Richard, co-editor and sweetie wife Sarah, photographer Brian Sims and co-editor Peter Heitman) who are intimately familiar with the subject matter – both as fans and as experts – the book, once again pleasantly laid out and colour-coded for ease of navigation, gives pertinent dates keenly researched and cross-checked as well as useful trivia (‘over 1000 fun facts and trivia‘ to be precise) and up-to-the-minute images and information. Every month opens with a look at key moments, pages are dotted with images taken by or featuring Richard and Sarah, which all combines to anchor the homecrafted, hands-on feel of the book, and make no mistake; that personal touch is the books super power. You’re not reading a cold, sterile account of major Star Wars moments, you’re ‘living’ them with the writing team.
With modern Star Wars films mostly landing at the end of the year, there’s a pleasing symmetry to the first volume, which saw the month of May loaded with release information pertaining to the original and prequel trilogies (and the ill-feted Solo). Here, December is the loaded month, welcoming the sequel trilogy and Rogue One, while season debuts of The Clone Wars, Rebels and various Disney Plus seasons reside as does Celebration which spans both halves of the year. Not to forget the oodles and (Hermi) oodles of trivia. Did you know that the first mention of the Episode IV: A New Hope subtitle was in Carol Titlemans The Art of Star Wars in 1979? Or that Star Wars landed on VHS and Betamax on 1st September 1982, the same date that 2 years later would see the birth of The Mandalorian composer Ludwig Goranson? You do now, but believe me when I say a cold winter (or hot summer) night browsing through this book will only be of benefit to you, and once again it’s a pleasure to say well done Richard for the tireless research and care put into this duo of releases, they’re already a much-used resource.
