Bounty Hunters (2020) #35

TARGET: FETT

With the aid of ”T’onga” and her bounty-hunter crew, ”Beilert Valance” was able to escape his forced service to the Empire. But after the cyborg hero inadvertently witnessed secret plans for the second Death Star–without realizing their significance–the elite ”Inferno Squad” successfully tracked him down to wipe the cerebral processor that stores his memories and with it all traces of the Empire’s secrets, as well as the last remnants of Valance’s humanity.

T’onga, who may have already sacrificed her marriage to save her friend, is forced to face a dangerous new reality with her dwindling crew in desperate need of reinforcements. She will need all the help she can get as the bounty hunters head towards their greatest challenge yet.

Welcome to the Bounty Hunters Guild Social Club on the world of D’assem, which is where we find T’onga as she meets with bounty hunter Khel Tanna to arrange the rental of her starship. T’onga has sold the Edgehawk to keep paying her crew, and needs a fast ship to ‘help save my friend‘. Khel knows where to find hired muscle, and we cut to a mass brawl as Khel’s shapeshifting Clawdite associate Catak shifts into a Twi’lek and starts the barfight which reveals infamous Clone Wars animated character Durge and Deathstick, who are immediately hired by Khel. Then the twist – the person they’re looking for is Boba Fett, and we cut to the hired vessel the Enigma Catalyst and it’s very cramped crew of Durge, Bossk, 4-LOM, Zuckuss and Valance who is swiftly getting his thoughts and memories down before the last vestiges of his humanity are gone forever. He draws his lost love Yura, but only the most basic of memories and his frustration boils over as he hurls the drawings to the floor. Catak morphs into Yura, and surprisingly Bossk leaps to Valance’s defense before Durge literally bangs their heads together to break it up.

We arrive at the Rishi moon, where Fett is waiting for their arrival and a skirmish begins as Fett rises on his rocket pack and begins to fire, Durge taking Fetts pack out with some scrap metal but taking a hit of his own as Bossk opens fire, getting close enough to grab Fett but losing a hand in the process. Deathstick is taken down by an electronet as Valance leaps in, clearly not remembering who Fett is as he takes him down and faces off with Zuckuss as T’onga sneaks up behind Fett and gets the drop on him, knocking off his helmet and holding a blade to his throat.

Fett expects T’onga to be collecting the huge bounty on his head placed by Black Sun, but instead she wants to hire him, an offer he accepts as he tells her she needs to do something for him first as the issue ends and we’re off to the races with a fresh storyline that looks set to bring in all the big guns of the bounty hunting world. It has all the energy we expect from the title, these alpha males bashing heads (literally) as the stakes get higher and higher. Fun, frenetic and as always running a heartfelt storyline beneath the action as we see Valance struggling with his disappearing memories and loss of humanity. A great stepping on point for new readers, the involvement of Boba Fett always a marquee attraction for casual fans.
