Issue 62 kicks off the new story arc which may wrap-up the cross-series Shu-Torun saga (first appeared in Kieron Gillen’s “Darth Vader” series.). The issue opens with Princess Leia setting the stage for her plan for reprisal against the treachery of Queen Trios. Although her plan is for the strategic interdiction of one of the Empire’s important resources it is underlain with a bit of revenge. Leia’s plan calls for sabotaging Shu-Torun’s fragile infrastructure which would make the planet uninhabitable but with little or no harm to the current inhabitants. To complete the mission Leia needs to gather some characters that have appeared in previous Gillen stories: The Partisans of Jedha (Ashes of Jedha) and Tunga Arpagion the shape-changing Clawdite thespian. While on Jedha, Luke seeks out the Followers of the Central Isotoper, not for the purposes of recruitment but rather to consult with them on matters of understanding the Force. Luke finds that they have deserted Jedha but at the conclusion we find they have migrated to Shu-Torun. Their arrival may be a bit of foreshadowing on Leia’s plans are more catastrophic than anticipated.
The issue brings the first chapter in Kieron’s Gillen’s final run. Although it seems to have been a short stay with the self-titled series, Mr. Gillen has certainly been well established in Marvel’s Star Wars and undeniably left his mark on the Star Wars universe as a whole. He has created a variety of new and memorable characters that have motivated the evolution of the Star Wars narrative. It will be a sad farewell to see him go.
I have been excitedly looking forward to this arc to see what is in store for Queen Trios. It’s quite possible her fate may not turn so well for her, but it will make a great story. It is sure be full of “Lies! Deceptions!” and more. I also have a feeling there will be more appearances of other familiar Gillen characters that we have met along the way before this story’s conclusion.
The biggest standout for me with this issue is the Gerald Parel’s wonderful cover art. His style is completely his own and his use of lighting in this cover is brilliant. John Tyler Christopher’s covers are always a pleasure and Kaare Andrews “Greatest Moments” cover has been my favorite in that series so far. Andrea Broccardo and crew continue to deliver their package of fantastic artwork that makes each issue an even greater pleasure to read. I can hardly wait to get the next issue in hand!
