Last issue ended with the ship of the mysterious bounty hunter blasting off, with Hunter inside, leaving the rest of Clone Force 99 behind, and this issue we pick up the story as the bounty hunter speaks with her employer Aurra Sing via hologram, Sing giving the location of their meeting on the oceanic planet of Doric Prime and wanting to be sure any clone-related complications are behind them. The bounty hunter assures her they are, but as she moves out of the room we see Hunter hiding high up in the ceiling, and quckly he contacts the Batch to tell them of the situation. Sing and the bounty hunter are meeting to exchange a list of Republic targets, and Tech suggests a plan that would see the meeeting take place and a the real list swapped out for a roster of fake names of non-existant people. Tech needs to get close to the planet to make the plan work, and as Hunter lies low he suggests his brothers do the same.
Doric Prime, and we see the bounty hunter and Aurra Sing meet as Hunter leaves the ship and we hear Tech telling him – unsurprisingly – that their mission won’t be easy. Added to that, while they’re close, Hunter will need to dive into the water and swim to a service tunnel to reach them and so he dives into the water but just as he finds his bearings what eppears to be two enourmous sharks looms in to attack, just as Hunter manages to get into the hatch leading back to Clone Force 99. The meeting takes place, with the mystery hunter telling Sing to make sure all the deaths appear to be accidental, so as not to draw attention, and we cut to the Batch as they finish the list, ready to be uploaded. Crosshair hears a noise, when suddenly IG droids attack, and Wrecker leaps in to stop them as Tech finishes his work.
Back with Aurra Sing, who is getting edgy and tense, especially when her comms go down, and Tech who believs the attacking droids are slowing down the signal upload. Wrecker kicks one of them off the platform nto the sea when a huge shark rises and swallows it. The last droid gone, the signal improves and the upload completes, but suddenly the waterfall they’re hiding behind grinds to a halt, revealing them to Aurra Sing and the bounty hunter. Sing is angry, but the mysterious figure matches that anger with a threat, asking of Aurra will do her job, which she agrees she will. Turning to Clone Force 99, the figure attacks, red lightsabers brandished, and removes her faceplate, revealing her identity – Asajj Ventress.
Boom, THAT’S how you end an issue, with a huge reveal after a relentless issue of action and pace. This mini series has been a lot of fun so far, allowing us to return to a squad of characters that over the past few years many of us have grown very fond of, and as well as that the action is pacey, the artwork pleasing and the scripting very on point. Hopefully, eyes are landing on this title and fans are seeing that over at Dark Horse, there’s corner of the galaxy that will be forever Clone Force 99. Bring on issue 4.
