Star Wars: The Mandalorian #3

CHAPTER 3: THE SIN

After collecting the Child, Mando was ambushed by Trandoshan warriors, and his ship was scavenged by Jawas.

With help from the Ugnaught Kuiil, Mando made a deal with the Jawas: retrieve the egg from the giant mudhorn and he can have the parts to his ship back.

Mando made good on the deal and is now on his way back to the Client….

The review of the third episode of The Mandalorian continues, taking us to the volcanic Outer Rim world of Nevarro as Mando meets the Client and it becomes increasingly clear just how important the little green guy is to the machinations of the Empire. In addition, Djarin is trying his best to make amends with his own people, visiting the Nevarro covert and handing over his payment to be made into his now iconic armour. The relationship between Djarin and the covert is fractious to say the least, which made for thrilling television and striking artwork. Put it this way – if you like Mandalorian armour, you’re going to love this.

With a character as taciturn as Mando, there are plenty of pages of artwork with little or no dialogue. Knowing the character as we now do, scenes like his return to the Client and the rescue of the Child are captivating, their import three years on very clear to the reader. This episode really was the tipping point for Mando, as he makes the choice to rescue the doomed package while showing his impressive skills in combat, taking out the ragtag Imperial troops defending the Client. As Djarin leaves and the call goes out to the bounty hunting fraternity, the late save by his fellow Mandalorians made for a captivating visual, the firepower and the fury raining down as they cover their brothers escape. Even the shot on Greef Karga, hitting his beskar block as Mando and the Child make their escape is well played, the heavy Mando flying high alongside the Razor Crest as they leave.

It’s certainly an easy read, the heavy lifting done by the episode itself, and laid out with pleasing artwork and a faithful adaptation of the script it’s a great series for newbies to the character and the show. What continues to confuse is the delay – this episode landed on Disney Plus 22nd November 2019, almost three years ago and while completists will certainly be grabbing the series or snatching up the trade paperback, there’s still an element of frustration at the delay. Season three is coming in fast, while a vast amount of ground has been covered by both lead characters in the three years since, which makes reviewing the issues with the enthusiasm the work between (and on) the covers deserve is hard.

So, given that, hats off to the art team of George Jeanty, Karl Story and Rachelle Rosenberg and that impactful cover by David Baldeón. Rodney Barnes brings a tight adaptation of the episode as we look forward to their flight to Sorgan and some AT-ST Raider action in Sanctuary.
