Bear in mind this is the era of the High Republic’s second plase, well over a century ahead of the first, and account for the incredibly long lifespan of Master Yoda and you may have some indication as to why the decision to hurl the third issue of the Yoda mini series a good few decades into the future makes all the sense. We open with two young kids, one referring to themselves as Bree, but this isn’t the Bree we know from the opening two issues – these kids are his nephews, and a significantly older Bree, now full of frame with a thick beard, walks into the room to break up their play. We flashback to the moment of Bree’s ‘triumph’, as he defeats the Cruklon much to Yoda’s disappointment, and watch as the Jedi master blasts offworld with no plans to ever return. In the now, Bree dispairs at the next generations refusal to believe the truth, venerating him as a hero as his frustration at Yoda leaving is still evident. The perfect time then for Yoda to return, much to Bree’s shock.

However, this is no coincidence; after many, many years the Cruklon are sending a raiding party, and as the young nephew demands Bree listen to him, and Yoda chides the insolent youngster, he reacts in the most modern of ways by blowing a raspberry and ignoring him. Keen to be involved, the youngsters take boats and head for the Cruklon platform, finding a young Cruklon girl waiting there and taking her back to the Scalvi village as a hostage. When the Cruklon return to find out their daughter has gone, they are enraged.

It’s a fractious situation, as the Cruklon remind the Scalvi that they lost their leader, and even after decades of steering far from their shores the Scalvi now steal their children. Just as it looks certain conflict is coming, Bree makes it clear he has no intention to fight, and explains that now he sees what he couldn’t see then; that the Scalvi have plenty, while the Kruklon are starving. He opens the gates of the village for the two tribes to share.

We end with Yoda contacting Coruscant to explain the situation, and conclude with Bree and the Scalvi breaking bread as we look at an amazed Bree – possibly for the final time – as he watches Yoda blast off. Coming next issue we’ll step forward again, to the time of Tales of the Jedi and a younger Count Dooku, but in this High Republic era take there’s much to be found. While there’s little actual action, the stakes are high and the lessons are told with wisdom earned, proving Yoda was right to trust Bree, even though it took some time. Another great issue, this – like the now almost completed Han Solo & Chewbacca series – shows just why this mini series is so valuable. Let’s hope there’s more stories like this coming down the pike.
