Star Wars Yoda (2023) #8

SIZE MATTERS NOT

PART TWO: THE FORGE

The wise Jedi Master Yoda has lived a long life in service to the greater good of the galaxy. After the rise of the Galactic Empire, he now spends his days on the secluded swamp world Dagobah, awaiting an important visitor and reflecting on his many adventures….

Yoda and Anakin Skywalker have learned of a weapon that could alter the course of the Clone Wars: a new breed of “Megadroids” that the Army of the Republic would be powerless to stand against.

Now Yoda and Skywalker lead a company of clone troopers to the planet of Golatha to destroy the foundry producing the Megadroids before the first prototypes can come online….

We ended last issue with the discovery of the Separatists new Megadroid program, and we kick off as Yoda and Anakin Skywalker call in to the Jedi Temple, letting the rest of the council know their plans and intentions, to travel to the Outer Rim and the world of Golatha hidden in a nebula and take it down before the droids can be deployed. Mace Windu senses Yoda’s apprehension, but the Jedi Master makes clear that he fully supports the plan but advises caution and not to be overconfident. Anakin takes umbrage at that, but Yoda is correct – Anakin believes Clone Company 326 are more than capable of securing the threat, and with some much-needed good luck they would have enough to see it through.

Approaching the Golatha Nebula their cruiser slows and as we cut to the surface we see Anakin and Yoda survey the landscape. No installations are to be seen meaning the Separatists have most likely built their foundry underground, and preparing Clone Captain Cesar they descend into the valley cautiously. However, it’s a kill box as blaster fire shoots up from below, and as Cesar is taken down Yoda orders Anakin to stay with the remaining men as he tracks down a battle droid and finds out where the droids are hiding.

When Yoda returns the rest of 326 Company are dead, leaving just the two of them and their tactics to take out the base, and finding the entrance they descend, quickly coming across a squad of battle droids that they quickly dispatch. Moving further in Anakin is shocked at the sheer scale of the factory, a monstrously massive base that seems too big to destroy, but Yoda has sppotted the central support column, and here they set up the charges and return to the surface as the charges blow and the factory is destroyed. Goiod fortune appears to have finally found them, but we end the issue as something blasts out of the flames up, up and down – a Megadroid, one which Yoda believes won’t be easy to defeat.

A really solid issue, not because of the plot or action, that’s very much a staple of the era when the trawl of chipping away at the Separatist threat sees missions like this happen daily, but the interaction between Yoda and Anakin is fun, illuminating and feels so in key with how Anakin reacts to criticism in Revenge of the Sith. It also clearly displays that while he is clearly very smart – the Chosen One – he continues to make tactical mistakes, ones that he will repeat throughout most of his future life as Darth Vader.
