Filming R1 – Very Rare Star Wars 8mm Footage (1976)
It’s April 1976 and the Star Wars production crew are in Tunisia, filming the street scenes of Mos Eisley in the town of Ajim. This footage documents the moment that 17 year old local boy Ahmed Trabelsi is chosen to wear the R1 Astromech costume and is fastened in then shown how to move by Star Wars production crew.

Originally intended to appear in the foreground with 2 other droids that pass the screen, the R1 unit was relocated and can be seen in the background when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker are stopped and questioned by stormtroopers in Mos Eisley.
