The third issue of Dark Horse’s Hyperspace Stories is a frothy and fun ride well worth 10 minutes of your time. Seemingly set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, this issue follows Finn and Poe on a quest to acquire some livestock and ship parts for the Resistance. So grab your poncho’s and fedora’s and join your favourite c̶o̶u̶p̶l̶e̶ buddies on this western adventure.

I’ve found this series to be a bit of mixed bag so far. The first issue was a wonderful and remarkably heartfelt little story that gave me high hopes for the return of Dark Horse. The second issue however was so inconsequential and throwaway that I’ve tried and failed to write a review for it on numerous occasions. The start of this issue, with the western setting and the aforementioned fedora’s, was so goofy that it took me a minute get past the first few pages. It then dawned on me that this is what Dark Horse does so well. The EU/Legends comics that they’re so revered for had their epic and dark moments but for every epic Maul, Rogue Squadron or Vader moment there was Tag & Bink or Ki-Adi Mundi and his six wives. This colour gave the Dark Horse canon so much texture that I’m glad they’re back in the fold; these kind of stories only compliment the more serious, expansive and epic stories currently being published by Marvel.

Regardless of your feelings towards the Sequel Trilogy, you can’t deny there’s so much potential for stories set during that era with such highly regarded things such as The Mandalorian and Shadow of the Sith providing the history it’s great that we are starting to spend some time with the characters again. I’ll be honest you could have any two other characters in this issue and set it during any era and it wouldn’t have lost anything but the fact that it was Finn and Poe and set during the Age of Resistance is much appreciated. This can only be a good thing. I’m personally not a fan of the Prequel Trilogy but I’ll be the first to say that some of the absolute best expanded material is set during that time. There’s no reason that can’t be the case here, especially with that huge and mostly untapped 32 year gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. The next issue looks to be a Rey and Chewbacca story and it’s written by Amanda Seibert, the writer behind the awesome debut issue of this series, and I’m beyond excited for it.

Taking its ques from another whip-cracking Lucasfilm property the highlight of the issue and it’s action centre piece is a thrilling tussle on a speeding train. The issue comes alive at this point and each panel is vibrant with some ambitious french/Wes Anderson-esque tableaus that really make the issue stand out. Yes it’s frothy and goofy but for it’s intended younger audience it’s perfect.

Roll on next issue!
