Star Wars Yoda (2023) #7

SIZE MATTERS NOT

PART ONE: A NEW THREAT EMERGES

The wise Jedi Master Yoda has lived a long life in service to the greater good of the galaxy.

After the rise of the Galactic Empire, he now spends his days on the secluded swamp world Dagobah, awaiting an important visitor and reflecting on his many adventures….

Writer: Marc Guggenheim
Artist: Alessandro Miracolo
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Colorist: Annalisa Leoni
Cover artist: Phil Noto
Editor: Mark Paniccia
Publication date: May 3, 2023

We open on Dagobah, our wise and wizened Jedi Master pottering around his kitchen as a disembodied voice converses with him. Yoda is being told about the darkness in the galaxy, the rise of the Empire and the reign of Palpatine and while Yoda knows about this, it’s clear he feels powerless to do anything about it. The threat of the dark side is too strong, their power too much for him to combat, but the voice has the perfect counter to his words – size matters not.

We switch location and time to the Ring of Kafrene where two men – a tall hooded character and a smaller, nervous man meet. The smaller man has information, and handing over 50,000 credits the taller man learns of a devastating weapon known as Operation Titan, a potential game-changer in the war. Here’s the twist, and it’s a beauty. It’s not a tall man at all but Yoda standing on top of an astromech, and he takes the information back to the Jedi Council. The information is sparse, but with Anakin having recently captured a Separatist frigate and its information banks ripe for plunder, Yoda tells Obi-Wan to inform Skywalker he is heading out to join him. There we learn that Operation Titan is being conducted on two planets, and Yoda tells Anakin they’re heading for the world of Enthenium, in the Western Reaches of the Outer Rim.

Anakin, Yoda and their clone commander escort dock on Enthenium and Yoda reminds Anakin that his diminutive size is their great advantage, and we see him crawl through air vents to see General Grievous being given a report. Operation Titan will be ready for tests at the end of the week, and as Grievous leaves Yoda waits for a moment and drops from the ceiling, checking the computer to find out more only for Grievous to come back into the room. It’s interesting to hear the Jedi Master referred to as ‘General Yoda‘ – of course he is, as much as Leia Organa was General Organa during the Galactic Civil War even though she was never called that onscreen in the OT – and Yoda waits for Grievous to speak before the pair ignite their lightsabers and clash, Yoda’s mastery of the Force proving too much even for Grievous and his brutal offensive.

Yoda manages to get enough space to exit, and as his clone detachment and Anakin keep battle droids at bay, Yoda arrives and they depart before more enemy forces arrive. They know their stolen frigate can be tracked so plan to scuttle it, and we learn the shocking truth of Operation Titan – it’s not a weapon but a new droid army, consisting of droids four times taller than humans known as Megadroids. Subtle, but accurate and the look on Yoda’s face tells you everything you need to know about how imperative it is to destroy them before they’re deployed on the field of battle.

Great artwork from Alessandro Miracolo behind a lavish Phil Noto cover, some snappy Marc Guggenheim dialogue and classic Star Wars action makes this another satisfying entry in a mini series that continues to add depth and detail to the master Jedi we thought we knew so well. Doubt in his own powers is understandable, and with the current storylines showing the ebb and flow of the Force it makes more sense than ever for Yoda to sense these tides and know when the ocean of the Force was flowing to the calm shores of the Jedi or the raging depths of the Sith. Very enjoyable indeed.
