Mary Elizabeth Winstead on husband Ewan McGregor’s view of Star Wars fandom: “It’s just such a special thing.”

For new faces entering the galaxy far, far away, some sage advice is always most welcome. This is no ordinary franchise or film, and with a fanbase that spans the planet and interest in every facet of the saga, any help is of value. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, wife of Ewan McGregor and soon to be seen as the live action incarnation of Hera Syndulla in Ahsoka, was the recipient of Ewan’s wisdom, and his advice didn’t touch upon her acting or performance but rather this broader fandom that envelops it.

“He was just so happy and excited for me, he really was. He’s just like, ‘There’s just nothing else like being embraced by this community and being a part of it. It’s just such a special thing.'”

“Over the years, he’s grown in his appreciation more and more and more and more, and I’ve been able to witness that and to see that grow in him, and to see his Obi-Wan series happen, and how that felt for him to be greeting the fans and getting their response.”

“Just to get to be a part of that world and to be part of something that people care so much about and characters that people are so invested in is such a special thing, so it’s kind of amazing that we get to be in this world together, but not together, you know?”

As Mary says, given the time placement of the two series – Obi-Wan is a decade before the events of A New Hope, while Ahsoka is half a decade after Return of the Jedi, so almost 20 years later –  there’s little chance the two actors will meet onscreen, although remember that Obi-Wan did appear in Rebels, so flashbacks may be the way for that to occur, but either way it’s great to see both actors so eager and keen for their time and adventures in the GFFA.
