When you hear the words Star Wars a variety of visions may come to mind, but the music of Star Wars is universal – right now you probably have one of John Williams songs playing through your head. EA games kicked off Friday’s programming with a look at the creative talents involved in creating the music of the smash-hit game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Joining co-composers Gordy Habb and Stephen Barton onstage was Nick Laviers, Audio Director at Respawn Entertainment.
The panel described the process of scoring requires a balance of creating music that isn’t distracting to players while also having the integral feel of Star Wars.
A huge catalogue of music ends up being developed because the nature of the games change so quickly that music needs to be adaptable to story changes.
In-universe music was a priority for the team and they asked around Lucasfilm to see what type of music and bands they were enjoying without letting them know. From that list of bands they then asked if they would like to create music for Star Wars.
The band TARTAN contributed to the soundtrack, and even had in-game characters.
Many hands come together to make the music of the game, an integral feature to gameplay as well as building on the rich musical history of Star Wars.
