How do you celebrate almost three decades of compositions on major properties like Star Trek, Pixar, Disney, Jurassic Park, Marvel and of course Star Wars? If you’re Michael Giacchino you take your favourite tracks and release an ‘Exotica-style covers’ album of tracks (available via pop culture collectibles company Mutant on 140-Gram vinyl and CD) with the fantastic title Exotic Themes for the Silver Screen, Vol. 1. Be aware, there are no Star Wars tracks on this first volume, but as it is the first volume who’s to say there won’t be something from Rogue One or Star Tours: The Adventures Continue on volume two?
“This album was inspired by the work of Lyman and Denny,” Giacchino said. “What would they do with the ‘Star Trek’ theme? Or video games like ‘Medal of Honor’? It was a way for me to play in that world I loved so much growing up. I thought it would be fun to create a fantasy world, where this album was recorded back in 1967 and then lost, only to resurface today.”
(T)he album showcases Giacchino’s unerring talent for melody, stripping down grand symphonies to their essential elements while retaining their aesthetic and emotional core.
