Fantasy is a genre I’ve always loved since I was still a kid. I usually enjoy science fantasy more, but fantasy in general makes my heart happy. Way back, I only watched fantasy movies — no matter what kind of fantasy it was, fantasy comedies, fantasy horror, and others. But before, it was a bit challenging to watch to my heart’s content simply because streaming wasn’t as accessible in the past.
Now, Netflix and other streaming services make it easy for us to watch new and classic fantasy TV series that we’ll enjoy. I’ve watched different fantasy series on Netflix, and I’m excited to share my personal favorites with you. Let’s start!
Arcane: League of Legends (2 Seasons, 19 Episodes – Completed)
Arcane won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program. That alone says a lot about this series. But to give you a better idea of what this show is about, it’s the story of two sisters, Vi and Powder, who were torn apart by the tension between a wealthy city (Piltover) and undercity (Zaun). The entire story focuses on survival, power, technology, and of course, family. It’s a great story, definitely, but it’s not for everyone.
The Witcher (4 Seasons, 24 Episodes – Ongoing)
If you ever watched Game of Thrones and liked it, you’ll probably like The Witcher as well. It became extremely popular with fans, and I can see why. The story is about Geralt of Rivia who’s a monster hunter simply trying to find his place. Everything’s in the world he’s living in – magic, scary creatures, political chaos, and war. He then finds himself tied to two beautiful and powerful women, one is a princess with a mysterious power and one is a powerful sorceress.
Just a friendly piece of advice. When you binge-watch this series, make sure you have a fast wireless service so you can really enjoy the show. I’m speaking from experience – trust me on this.
The Sandman (1 Season, 11 Episodes – Ongoing)
The Sandman is another novel adaptation of Dream, the one who takes control of the realm of dreams. Dream was trapped for over a century but was able to escape. Unfortunately, his absence caused a lot of chaos, and so he needs to fix it by dealing with demons, gods, and humans. He needs to do all of these while restoring the balance in his own world. You’ll like this series if you enjoy mythology and fantasy.
The Umbrella Academy (4 Seasons 36 Episodes – Completed)
The Umbrella Academy became one of the most popular science fantasy series on Netflix. If you like powers, time travel, apocalypse, and… well, dysfunctional families, this show might just be what you’re looking for. The story is all about a group of adopted siblings with special abilities that can help stop an impending apocalypse. As they work together and fight each other (sometimes), they discover more secrets about their families and identities.
Since it’s a Netflix exclusive, it can’t be watched on other platforms. However, I’m hoping that it’ll be available on other platforms soon like Amazon Prime Video, Sling TV, and DISH TV. The world deserves to watch this masterpiece.
The Bottom Line
There are a lot of great fantasy TV series on Netflix, you just have to look and give them a try. Honestly, at first, I wasn’t really expecting these shows to be that good. But when I watched it, I was able to understand the hype about them. That’s it for now. I hope you give these series a try and enjoy them as much as I did. Happy watching!
