Ryan Reynolds on his R-rated Star Wars pitch being “a Trojan Horse for emotion”

Speaking on the latest episode of The Box Office Podcast, Ryan Reynolds revealed that he has pitched a Star Wars project to Lucasfilm, and while he had no word on whether or not Lucasfilm had shown any interest, he did wonder why projects of its ilk hadn’t been considered before.

“I pitched to Disney I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated ‘Star Wars’ property? It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters, there’s a wide range of characters you could use.’ And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar, R-rated as a Trojan Horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.

I’m not saying I’d want to be in it. That would be a bad fit. I’d want to produce and write or be a part behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP exist very well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity really with ‘Star Wars’ because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.”

With the success of Andor, perhaps something previously considered out of the box like this might gain traction. Obviously we’re not talking Deadpool levels of crudity, but given the star power of Reynolds (currently developing an X-Men project for Marvel) and collaborator Shawn Levy (two years out from releasing Starfighter with fellow Canadian Ryan Gosling) then maybe there’s something in this.
