Star Wars (2025) #7

TO THE BRINK

A dark plot by a group of Nagai pirates and the Zantarrk Gang has led LUKE SKYWALKER, RYNN ZENAT, HAN SOLO and BEILERT VALANCE across the galaxy searching for ways to stop the coming attack on the fledgling New Republic.

Luke and the team went on a mission to rescue a fellow team of New Republic soldiers, where they were ambushed by battle droids left over from the Clone Wars! Luke, Valance and Han found clone clone and went to battle, taking out most of the droids.

Meanwhile, tensions between the Nagai, Fenril Consortium and New Republic are heating up, with LEIA activating agent BASTION for a mysterious mission….

We open the 7th issue of the latest volume of the modern Marvel Star Wars run inside the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon as it roars towards Kaltrais, and as the ship lands Luke tears down the ramp and sprints off, quickly finding the Nagai Jesrit, who is fiercely fighting the Fenril Consortiums forces. We see Jesrit and Mantvir reunited, and see as Jesrit turns to spot Luke, Han and their fellow New Republic warriors approaching. They pause for a moment, remembering the fallen Garlev, but their moment is broken by Han who reminds them that they have a problem.

We cut to a far more sedate Chandrila as Mon Mothma and General Organa convene, strenuously discussing the wisdom of bringing in a secret spy, codenamed Bastion. Mothma is unsure, while Leia is adamant it’s their best option, Mon claiming that the responsibility of what needs to be done might be too much for any one person to bear.

A quick switch back to Kaltrais and we see Bastion in action, grabbing a scout trooper and demanding information, only to learn that the trooper is a Nagai, one promised wealth to fight against their own people by Reyna Oskure and Venk but instead watched their homes be taken, lied to. Bastion understands, and tells the Nagai to instead turn their weapons against their slavers, and with the information she needs she moves on, taking out three more troopers and messaging back to her colleagues as we see her silhouette against the doorway of Prime Minister Almovar’s office. She is disappointed that the New Republic would send an assassin, much like the Empire would have once done, but instead we see Bastion joined by Rynn, Luke and Jesrit. They’re there to persuade her to leave the Fenril Consortium and stop the coming war, and while she is wary of Luke and his Jedi skills and certain the Nagai would never forgive Pirros and move forward, they all agree that a new way must be found, and after it’s explained to her exactly how she was betrayed by Oskure and Venk – who also lied to the Nagai – Luke calms down an angry and passionate Jesrit and in an impressive splash page we see Luke run down the crimes and the history of Oskure. As Rynn explains, Oskure is hungry for war but with her next decision, Almovar can chose peace.

Now convinced that this is the right way forward, she tells them she will order her fleet to stand down, and they leave Almovar alone to consider her next move as they fight their way back to the Falcon, Luke noticing that Rynn seems frail, and a relieved Han asks whether Luke has averted another war and we see the Falcon and a dozen other ships blast away from Kaltrais.

Meanwhile, back with Almovar as she meets with Oskure, she explains her decision and the reasons why she wants to oull her world out of the Fenril Consortium, relieved that Oskure has taken it so well. Calm at first, Oskure explains that she has far from accepted it, and we watch as she lashes out at Almovar, her claws tearing into her shocked face, and watch as she slashes down at the Prime Minister, blood trailing up with every swipe. She opens the viewscreen and Venk appears, and now in complete control of Pirros and its military she orders Venk to turn the full fury of the Fenril Consortium on the fledgling Nagai rebellion and crush it before it truly begins, and we end with an impressive full page of Oskure standing over a slain and bloodied Almovar.

While still somewhat confusing in regards to the various players in the Nagai rebellion an the Fenril Consortium, this is another action-packed issue as the various factions come to a head, all presented with beautiful art by Pete Woods who takes on the unenviable task of filling in for Phil Noto and absolutely nails it. Valance, Han and Rynn are largely background players in this issue, but that’s fine; they’re there for support, and with Han at the helm and Valance now very much a part of the team (again, an interesting continuation of where we left Valance at the end of Ethan Sacks brilliant Bounty Hunters run) the focus is on Luke. His maturity and diplomacy is really coming through as he matures in this post-Jedi era, while on Chandrila Leia continues to display her knack for evocative persuasion that has seen so many missions come good over the years.

We leave with the worry of an injury to Rynn and the threat of conflict in the 8th issue, but for issue 7 it’s a case of moving the storyline on married to some superb art behind another striking cover from Phil Noto. A job well done indeed.
