Andor: Tony Gilroy and how “These performances will be celebrated and discussed for years to come”

While 14 Emmy nominations for season 2 of Andor is absolutely something to celebrate, the realisation that only one actor – Forest Whitaker – was nominated in any of the acting categories has caused some consternation. With indelible performances by Stellan Skarsgard, Diego Luna, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, Elizabeth Dulau and so many others littering the season, that sole nomination has raised eyebrows, something Tony Gilroy addressed while speaking with Deadline.

“There are a lot of performances that I wish were recognized. Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly. There are a dozen performances.

“These aren’t great moment-to-moment [performances], these are epic, long-term character studies that they’ve done over 24 episodes. I think the ultimate victory is that these performances will be celebrated and discussed for years to come. I feel confident about that.”

Gilroy was also asked about a future return to the galaxy far, far away.

“I’m prepping a movie now to shoot in L.A. next year. It’s not on the menu right now. I’ll never say never.”

Gilroy isn’t wrong, the fandom will be chewing over these performances, now carved into the fabric of Star Wars, for years – decades – to come, and we’ll be discussing this on the next episode of Making Tracks, out next Tuesday.
