Situated in the Bay Area of San Francisco, George Mark Children’s House is a free-standing pediatric palliative care facility, the first of its kind in the US, where care is provided at no cost to families. Through its Child Life initiative, an enhanced program is provided to give the best quality of life to patient with life-limiting conditions. During their Child Life month, Spirit Week saw a number of Star Wars inspired activities take place and a slew of GFFA characters visit GMCH including a blue-skinned chap from At Attin.
“We always strive to create meaningful and engaging experiences for our patients,” said Kyle Amsler, Child Life Specialist at GMCH. “Spirit Week gives our kids a chance to connect with familiar themes they love, which resonates deeply with so many of our families, who are huge Star Wars fans. It allows them to just be kids.”
The real highlight was an unforgettable visit from members of the local chapters of the 501st Legion (Golden Gate Garrison) and Rebel Legion (Endor Base), known for their meticulously crafted Star Wars costumes and dedication to charity work. Everyone’s favorite droid, R2-D2, was also present, courtesy of the Bay Area Droid Builders. Their presence brought undeniable positive vibes to the day. Adding an extra special touch, one of the costumers brought Neel, the universally beloved Skeleton Crew character, delighting patients, families, and staff alike.
“Not only do Legion members bring the characters to life, but the essence of a kid character like Neel really resonated with the patients,” said Ricky Resurreccion, Head of Marketing & Events at GMCH and a proud member of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion. “One patient in particular took to Neel and engaged with him as if she were talking to the actual blue boy from At Attin!”
Moments like these remind everyone that despite life-limiting realities, joy can still be boundless. The magic of this beloved space fantasy continues to inspire, and George Mark is grateful for the Star Wars community’s ongoing support of their mission — and, more importantly, for making these moments truly meaningful.
