Episode 9 – Welcome to the Rebellion

Official summary: In the Ghorman aftermath, Mon Mothma takes a stand. Cassian must carry out a difficult extraction.

Trivia
As with most episode titles in the new season, this one is also taken from dialogue in the episode. It was also uttered in Rogue One.

Bail says to Mon Mothma that he cannot be at Yavin just yet, that it is not yet finished and says “next year”. With each episode being a time jump bringing us closer to Rogue One, and the next block being the three episodes taking place right before Rogue One starts, he is absolutely right. Bail can be seen clearly on Yavin 4 during Rogue One after all.

During Bail’s conversation with Mon Mothma he mentions a Senator Ton. This individual is entirely new. Ton and Mothma are also not the only ones that the ISB is listening in on, but none of the Aurebesh seen at the ISB operations room is clear enough to fully make out the other names.

Mon Mothma’s office was seen briefly (just the sunken couch and the window behind it) in 2×04, but is now seen fully for the first time.

The ISB operations room was filmed for this episode and 2×06, at the McLaren Technology Centre, Woking. Unfortunately this filming location cannot be visited.

Here we see ISB Attendant Felzonis (performed by Ragevan Vasan), who was first seen in 2×07 and reappears here. He name checks a supervisor Grandi, who is also not new and was seen in ISB meetings since the Aldhani episodes.

As they mentioned in the episode, the ISB plant driver Kloris has been around for a long time. This is the first time we hear his first name Exmar being uttered. The first name first appeared in Star Wars:: The Visual Guide.

Familiar species spotted during the Senate scenes are: An Aki-Aki (passing through the security gates), a Twi’lek (at the table next to Bail’s team), the same Ottegan from 2×04, a Melitto (at Gate 9 – species made famous by Sarco Plank) and various of the unnamed species and even a couple of new ones. The most intriguing of the new ones are seen as two individuals when Oran gets arrested in the opening scene.

Bail Organa’s team consists of Beska (the traitor – Ana Ularu), Charval (Beru Tessema) and Selko (Akshay Khanna).

Many new Senators are added to the lore thanks to this episode. In order of appearance they are:
* Senator Den Gane – The subtitles however lists his dialogue as being spoken by Senator Nico. This was an error due to both Gane and Nico being voiced by Colin Purves.
* Senator Nico – The next speaking Senator. And like their voice being done by the same actor, Nico and Gane are also performed by the same actor: Caitlin Nicholas
* Karloo (Nicholas Blane) is the human Senator who speaks about someone of their own that they lost on Ghorman. If he means Syril, could this be the Senator for Coruscant? An unnamed Coruscant Senator was mentioned in the novel Thrawn.
* Erveen, senator from Hodi, performed by Jane Bertish. Hodi is also a new world.
When Bail is seen talking on the viewscreens in the Senate hallways, the Aurebesh reads “Sen. Bail Organa”. Predictably, the same goes for when Mon Mothma is speaking and seen on the screens. Only in her case they add the world she is representing as well, Chandrila.

Next to Vel on Yavin we see an unnamed species introduced with Susaut Volupicite in Solo. But, more importantly, the return of Melshi who was of course first seen in Rogue One and reappeared last season in the Narkina-5 episodes.

They want Mon Mothma to arrive with Gold Squadron on Yavin and come in with a speech. As they say it “rewrite the story”. And this is a clever way to connect it properly with how we saw Mon Mothma’s escape and speech in Rebels 3×18 Secret Cargo.

Cassian, Wilmon and Dreena arrive on Yavin Four in a U-wing and as Wilmon is still wounded, he is taken away by medics. These medics wear the same red cross symbol that we have seen before in The Clone Wars.

Nerian leaf is a new type of tea.

The bird you hear in the Yavin jungle uses the same sound effect heard as a bird on Endor.

Fay Drolla (Tim Plester) activates K-2SO in a manner reminiscent of Frankenstein’s monster being animated to life.

Listed in the end credits but unknown are Pono and Jeen.
