Could Indiana Jones be on the verge of a return?

Writing over at the DisInsider, Skyler Shuler has made some bold claims about the future of the Indiana Jones franchise which, if true (and they are very much a rumour at this point) would spark off a whole new future for our intrepid archaeologist and presumably see a fresh series of adventures for Henry Jones Jr. He believes Lucasfilm are letting Indy rest for the time being before a possible announcement at the 2026 running of D23, noting that ‘Indiana Jones is still an iconic IP and Disney/Lucasfilm do not want to waste that‘.

Are there any early plans for what’s next in the Indiana Jones franchise?

Lucasfilm is letting the franchise rest for a bit before they do a full reboot of the franchise. I would expect the studio to announce something next year at the D23 Expo because even though the last film tanked at the box office, Indiana Jones is still an iconic IP and Disney/Lucasfilm do not want to waste that.

Again, this is very much a rumour, but if there’s any truth in the claim then we could be looking at another classic Lucasfilm IP making a strong return. While Dial of Destiny disappointed at the global box office it did well on Disney Plus, but the release that really showed there’s a future for new Indy adventures was Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which has done impressive number on all platforms, especially PS5.

If an Indiana Jones series were to hit Disney Plus, with all the action and adventure a modern streaming show could present (with ILM, Skywalker Sound and a hefty budget behind it) then we really might be keeping up with the Jones’ sooner than we think.
