With a brilliantly portrayal in the bank and a memorable death embedded in the psyche of an entire Star Wars generation, the thought of once again returning to the role of Kanan Jarrus appears to be less than enticing to voice actor Freddie Prinze Jr. With many of his fellow Rebels actors returning to their roles in some form or fashion in live action (Steve Blum as Zeb Orellios in The Mandalorian, Dave Filoni as Chopper and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn in Ahsoka) and animated (Vanessa Marshall as Hera in The Bad Batch), the chance to once more be Kanan was offered to Prinze Jr, but as he explains any favours he might have owed Lucasfilm and the team behind the shows have been used up after returning as young Caleb Dume in The Bad Batch and voicing Force ghost Kanan in The Rise of Skywalker.

As he explained in an interview with podcaster Kristian Harloff, he was asked to record a line for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and to voice a young Kanan – then known as Caleb Dume – in Star Wars: The Bad Batch’s premiere. “I feel like every time you hear Kanan’s voice since Rebels ended, it really kind of dilutes his impact. I was asked as a favor, but I feel like all their favors are used up now,” the actor said. When Harloff asked, “So no Ahsoka?” Prinze Jr. responded, “No Ahsoka. I’m done with Kanan. I’m too old for that stuff.”
