Avengers: Infinity War has had a box office weekend to remember as the three year old record opening weekend of The Force Awakens falls to the might of the Avengers as Infinity War (which you may know features among its production staff our very own Brian Cameron) brought in $257,698,183 over the weekend, beating out The Force Awaken‘s Rathtar haul of $247,966,675 back in late 2015.

That figure was surpassed by its worldwide total of $382,823,108, making for a total of $640,521,291 for the largest opening worldwide weekend ever. Already Infinity War is the second highest grossing film of the year in the States, behind Black Panther which remains at number 5 after 11 weeks on release, and while it’s unlikely to threaten The Force Awakens North American record of $936,662,225 it’s got a good chance of outpacing Titanic, Black Panther and approaching Avatar which sits on $760,507,625 unadjusted.

In a tradition ranging right back to the mid 70’s era, when Star Wars surpassed Jaws as the highest grossing film in North America, Lucasfilm congratulated Marvel Studios on their success.

Now eyes turn to the rest of the years releases as we gear up for the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and while no one is expecting anywhere hear the numbers posted here it will be fascinating to see how the second Star Wars Story episode stacks up against other recent Star Wars releases.

And given we’re in such a congratulatory mood we will forgive whoever mocked up this poster for only adding three instead of the traditional four-dot ellipsis….
