Obi-Wan Kenobi: What would a second season look like?

This past week there was a rumour that gained a little bit of traction involving the supposed development of a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi. This isn’t new. It’s been floating around since the first season ended in June 2022, and McGregor is constantly asked about. He even went as far as stating that Lucasfilm were ‘exploring story ideas’ at a FanExpo some months back. As ever with these things it is only a rumour and should be treated as such, but if it comes to fruition then what exactly could happen in the series going forward as it was originally conceived as a movie and then a limited series.

Training with Qui-Gon Jinn

This one is the most glaringly obvious, as it was mentioned in Revenge of the Sith and constantly teased throughout the six episodes of the show as Ben is constantly trying to make contact with his old master. It wasn’t until the final minutes of the show, however, that Qui-Gon’s Force Ghost appeared to Ben. This would be a fantastic element of Star Wars lore to explore – training to make the leap into the afterlife; but the obvious stumbling block of this story is entirely dependent of Liam Neeson. He seemed happy to return for his scene-stealing cameo and more than likely only required a day of filming but whether he’d be up for a full return as a regular supporting cast member is another question entirely. Of course, we should never rule out voice acting for Neeson as he does seem very protective of the character.

Darth Maul Rematch

There was a rumour going around recently on socials that one of the story arcs for George’s cancelled series Underworld would have involved Obi-Wan Kenobi heading off-world for a rematch with Darth Maul. In fact, Maul returning was the story thread for a long time with the Obi-Wan film and series until Filoni suggested that having a rematch with Vader was doable and probably more emotionally impactful. Maul has become one of the most popular and complex characters in all of Star Wars and having this rematch in live-action would certainly satisfy fans.

Helping with The Path

During the course of season one of Obi-Wan Kenobi, he makes the discovery of The Path and further revelations about who exactly is helping Jedi make safe passage in an Imperial ruled galaxy. Perhaps a team up with Quinlan Vos could be on the cards if Obi-Wan is called to action to help if The Path is in danger. 19 years is a long time to stay in one place and season one proved that Obi-Wan can leave Tatooine for valid reasons. Now, in terms of canon in the timeline, season one ended with Obi-Wan returning to his old self and regaining his powers, his spark, and having him help fellow Jedi could be a great story thread.

Stays on Tatooine to Protect Luke

There is of course the notion that Obi-Wan doesn’t have to leave Tatooine at all. If he’s training with Qui-Gon and keeping an eye on young Luke, then he’s occupying his time plentifully. Perhaps the show could go episodic with an adventure-of-the-week style format. In this realm of storytelling, he could defend Lars Homestead one week, have a run in with bounty hunters the next week and go to war with the Tuskens the next. Though it may not seem so, there are plenty of storytelling opportunities available to the writers if Ben stays on Tatooine.

One Last Clone War

This one has been muted before but there is the complete possibility of a second season of this show being an entire flashback to The Clone Wars. Having Hayden and Ewan perform these characters during that era would have fans drooling. If they did this then is this how they finally bring back Samuel L. Jackson? Ewan has stated that he’d like to wear the armour and there were rumours of how this sequencing could come to the forefront last year. The era of the Clone Wars, though it has been explored in great detail, is still ripe for storytelling.

Only time will tell if this proves to be true but there is a gap in the schedule coming up. Lucasfilm are switching their output to one live-action series a year and with Ahsoka coming next year there is nothing on the horizon for 2027, just in time for the 50th. Could Ewan be warming up for one more “Hello there!”?
