Indiana Jones fans, be on alert – to celebrate 45 years of the worlds greatest adventurer, the Prince Charles Cinema in London is taking us back to 1936 and the film that started it all – Raiders of the Lost Ark, with three 4K screenings on Friday 11th, Sunday 13th and Thursday 17th September. Are you brave enough to enter the temples, outrun the boulders and battle the Nazi’s one more time? If so, book your tickets now.
It’s finally coming back! After years away from the PCC, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK returns to our screens this September in glorious 4K, celebrating its 45th Anniversary.
The idea began with George Lucas, who wanted to resurrect the adventure serials he had loved growing up. He and Philip Kaufman developed the character and story before Lucas eventually brought the project to his friend Steven Spielberg, who had long wanted to make his own James Bond-style adventure. The result was Indiana Jones: archaeologist, professor, adventurer and one of cinema’s great heroes, embodied perfectly by Harrison Ford.
Set in 1936, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK sends Indy around the world in pursuit of the Ark of the Covenant before it can fall into Nazi hands, bringing him back into the life of Karen Allen’s brilliant Marion Ravenwood along the way. What follows is essentially a masterclass in adventure filmmaking. Spielberg’s direction is astonishingly precise, Douglas Slocombe’s cinematography is gorgeous, John Williams provides one of his most iconic scores and the film simply never stops moving.
Even Paramount reportedly had reservations about its commercial prospects before release. Instead, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK became the highest-grossing film of 1981, received enormous critical acclaim and earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Its throwback to classical Hollywood and old adventure serials somehow created something that immediately became iconic in its own right. The opening temple escape, the rolling boulder, the Well of Souls, the truck chase, the swordsman, the melting faces… RAIDERS contains more indelible moments than most entire franchises. Four sequels later, the original remains, for us, the most perfectly constructed INDIANA JONES adventure of them all.
