Solo : A Star Wars Story actress Thandie Newton is submitting the Westworld episode ‘Akane No Mai’ as her Emmy submission for Best Drama Supporting Actress. The 5th Episode in Season 2 of the HBO drama saw her character, Maeve, captured and taken into Shogun World. She is warned that this fictional place is even more extreme than her own.
She encounters many doppelgangers of the Westworld hosts there, including her own equivalent the geisha Akane, who kills a local emissary. Maeve convinces her to escape into the underground network. Akane’s daughter Sakura is killed, so she in turn kills the shogun murderer.
Newton is a returning nominee for this Emmy category, and other nominees for the 2018 ceremony, include last year’s winner Ann Dowd along with “The Handmaid’s Tale” co-stars Alexis Bledel and Yvonne Strahovski. Others in the category are returning nominee Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”), Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”), plus first-timer Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”).
