Anytime Steven Spielberg announces a new film, it’s time to sit up and take notice. When Steven Spielberg announces that his next film will be a UFO story (this is the mind behind Close Encounters of the Third Kind, War of the Worlds and E.T), it’s time to get excited, and 15th May 2026 will see exactly that with writer David Koepp crafting a script from Spielbergs story.

It’s early days, but will John Williams return to score the film? Will Spielberg team up once again with ILM? And does this film on 15th May following an Avengers film on 2nd may spell problems for whichever Star Wars projects arrives on 22nd May 2026? Let’s hope there’s room for all in what looks set to be a jam-packed May schedule (anyone remember 2018?)

Steven Spielberg has lined up his next feature film, which will be released in 2026.

Universal Pictures is backing the movie, which will open in theaters on May 15, 2026. It’s unclear what the untitled project — which the studio described as a “new original event film” — is about, though Variety previously reported that Spielberg is working on a UFO story.

David Koepp, whose previous work with the filmmaker includes “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” is writing the script from a story by Spielberg. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce the film.
