On this day 45 years ago on 12th April 1977, the first issue of the six issue adaptation of Star Wars arrived on newsstands across the United States. Not only did it kickstart a pop culture phenomenon that would build and build and build to where it remains nearly half a century later as an icon of cinema, but its record-breaking sales almost single-handedly saved Marvel Comics from extinction during those perilous days of the mid 70’s.
SPINNER SPOTLIGHT, April 12, 1977!! STAR WARS! This comic heralded the coming of a great pop culture avalanche the likes of which we’ll never see again. The comic that famously saved Marvel & put ‘em in the black. Did you pick this up at newsstands, multi-packs, treasury edition? pic.twitter.com/u8HhPom06n
